Apart from the Acer and HP Netbooks which are widely available, have a look at this:
    MSI X340

Had seen it for Rs19,990 a few months back so prices may fall again. Cant really say for sure though.

HP mini has really neat feature that lets you boot up in a few seconds if you want to browse the net.

May i warn you, 10" feels rather small, the acer and mini get a bit hot over long use, performance is sluggish with multiple apps.

If you download movies, vids, music and photos a lot, you also need a portable HD that is suitable with notebook computers. Try Western Digital's Scorpio Black. It has a high capacity (1TB). I also find mine cool and quiet.

    I'm considering Dell™ Inspiron Mini 10 (S541039IN8)

Does anyone have any suggestions/complaints/etc about this? At 16K + shipping it seems pretty reasonable and there doesn't seem to be anything wrong with the hardware selection.

    Any similar netbooks worth considering?

I recently bought a netbook. Hardly one month. Dell dominated my thoughts earlier. Later decided on Acer. Bought it for Rs. 15,600 including tax. No shipping charges as I bought it from local dealer. Better to buy from local dealer as you may need to check with them in case some damage happen during the warranty period. All major netbooks are almost same in price. Better choose the one which is cheap. Acer has the lowest price among branded netbooks.

    Check it here

Acer also offers netbook without Windows. By this way you can save money spent on operating system.

I got it as a special offer. I got it with Windows, but that was a dealer specific offer. For Rs. 14,900 (without tax) you get one without Windows. With tax, it becomes 15.6 K.

So, I finally got it. Lenovo Ideapad S-10 3 at 17.75k with an optical mouse, 6-cell battery, Win7S.

    The alternatives:
    • HP (don't know the model) with similar specs, but less hard disk space (160GB) and an awfully cramped keyboard. 3-cell battery. 17k
    • a Gateway (again, no model number) for 15k with WinXP, 160GB HDD and even more cramped keys. It was apparently an old model that the store was trying to rid itself of.
    Why I chose this:
    • It's designed to be easy to use. It has a great keyboard, easy to type (touch typing is impossible on the other two).
    • Win 7 is far easier to use on a small screen than XP is. Although I would've used a Linux based made-for-netbooks window manager like UNR, this is for my dad who asked me to keep the "laptop" "pure" and not to install "Linux-winux jaisi cheeze".
    • Great battery backup - when the battery was 70% charged, it said 7 hours remaining!
    • Nearly the best specs among netbooks for not as nearly the price of the higher-end models

Feel free to ask more or tell me whether it was a good buy or not.

I have recently purchased samsung N150 through StoreCoin.com.

Really nice one. Battery backup is extraordinary and screen with Matt finishing. Google Samsung N150 to find more details.

    Goodluck!

Sorry for not replying. I've been pretty busy.

@Rajan1311: Like I said, I'm not using it myself. I'll certainly get bored of W7 in a minute or two - I'm a linux fan!

I have been using a netbook since last year and it has given my a very satisfactory performance. It is very light and not bulky hence its easy to carry and because of its high battery life, I don't have to worry about getting it charged.

As for as your requirements are concerned, they will be very well met with an Intel Atom processor based netbook.

MSI is no more supplying netbooks/lappies in India. Try Samsung Netbook for a great build quality, reliability and economy. Asus netbooks are cheap and do not run hot. At your budget you can find good AMD dual core 12" ASUS with ATI graphics.
