you will need a crossover cable instead of a normal LAN cable. You can also use a LAN cable with a crossover adapter.

directly connecting normal LAN cable can permanently damage your equipments.

YEah you need special cables , else you can use a USB to USB Cable having special adapter and software and you can transfer files, else through wifi you can do it if laptop n desktop both have wifi.

I once tried through male to male USB wire and was wondering why the transfer is not taking then googled and found that even simple USB cable cant transfer data, and thank god I did not damage my equipments in the experiment...

If you have a large sized USB you can use that to transfer the files, which I think would be easier.

Why do you want to complicate with more hardware adaptors? If you have a router at home, you can connect both the computer to that router (so that proper IP address can be assigned). Once connected, seach for network and file sharing (Vista/Win7). Enable file sharing and make sure that both computers are password enabled. Password authentication is a must to share files over the network.

Once done, login to the remote computer (with its credentials) and copy paste all files as required. If the network is thru LAN cables the speed is @100Mbps.

    Cheers!

I think the best method is cloud storage or USB, it is easier and less hassle.
