you will need a crossover cable instead of a normal LAN cable. You can also use a LAN cable with a crossover adapter.
directly connecting normal LAN cable can permanently damage your equipments.
YEah you need special cables , else you can use a USB to USB Cable having special adapter and software and you can transfer files, else through wifi you can do it if laptop n desktop both have wifi.
I once tried through male to male USB wire and was wondering why the transfer is not taking then googled and found that even simple USB cable cant transfer data, and thank god I did not damage my equipments in the experiment...

thank you for your suggestion... i got it... i did it by getting started in windows 7... there is a option for file transfer... both of my system hav windows 7...
