it seems like you can't directly connect a 5.1 speaker setup with full functionality to a laptop with only 1 audio out port however you can still connect 5.1 setup to single audio out & you will get sound out of all 6 speakers though it will not be true 5.1 audio but still much better than default laptop speakers.
Connecting a 5.1 to my laptop?

whitestar is correct. To connect to a 5.1 or 7.1 you need:

    - laptop with 5.1 or 7.1 SPDIF outputs - it is unlikley that laptops have these - there is hardly any space for these
    - if not SPDIF then laptop must have digital output - optical or coaxial - these output 5.1 sound only
    - if none of the above, then laptop must have HDMI out - now there are few laptops with HDMI out; HDMI can output 7.1 sound as bitstream
    - and of course, you need a system that can accept any one of the above three (or all of them) inputs, a decoded circuit and speaker system

you can not connect 7.1 system directly to hdmi port.hdmi port carry both audio & video through a single cable so first you have to connect a display device, monitor or lcd tv,which supports 7.1 audio to your laptop & then you connect your 7.1 system to that display device.

get a usb sound card. works like a normal sound card. These are available in 5.1 variants. If you have to use 5.1 output, then use one of these:

    Creative Sound Bl;aster X-FI USB 5.1

    Thanks,
