Smile Suggestion/Advice for Mini laptop in 2011

    Hello Friends,
I need an advice on Mini Laptops. I want to buy a Laptop for my parents since I've moved in abroad. Speaking over phone is getting expensive & not enough time as well. So I have decided to buy Laptop/Deskop Pc for my Parents. Since My budget is under 15K so I believed, Mini Laptop will be the Best Option.

Now, I am confuse between some Branded Companies (Dell, HP, Samsung, Acer Etc.) After Searched on Site Reviews, I have reached between Dell & HP and Both laptop have same configuration with almost same Price but I am not sure that which would be the Best one. if any one knows the Specify model Number, Request you to please mention it.

Guy's need your Expert Advice here/if any one already using it can share his Personal experience.

Really Appreciate time for all of you friends!

Have you considered VOIP ? vonage or Ooma ?
Once set up Vonage does not need a computer. ( You have to pay in U.S and get a U.S number )
Ooma also same. ( cheaper )
I have with a BSNL Home 750 512 Kbps BB line and Vonage almost 18 hours a day standby. laptop used for forum use etc. also on standby !!

Any friend can setup with his laptop, the adsl modem and Vonage unit and Any phone (POTS) or cordless.
Elderly people have some aversion to use computers !!
Application Skype used for video and voice chat etc.

Type in SEARCHBOX above Vonage for old threads of this forum.

Thank for your reply! Yes i know this Service But I guess It will be much costly and little complicated since I am not with my parents and need to setup at home.
My parents are not so much aware about IT work also I think, it will be much cheaper to speak on Messengers Unlimited.

Also, I don't have good Knowledge for this VOIP but I have seen in New Delhi MTNL does provide.

So I am still looking for Laptop Suggestion unless I can find out this VOIP.

    Regards,
    A

If you have a Broadband connection at home,VOIP service can be used.

ADSL BB==>> adsl splitter===adsl Modem==>vonage unit (or ooma unit))===>>voip telphone
( bothVOIP providers will have U.S.number and paid for in U.S
    Option 2:
    ADSL BB==>>adsl splitter===>adsl modem==>>wifi router==Laptop
Yahoo messenger Skype / internet surfing etc.

Since Option 2 is selected ,
confirm any BB connection applied for and connected/working now with a desktop( or computer laptop netbook yet to be purchased )
You may have to depend on the Dealer or ISP to set up the System.

Ok, sounds good to me but still have some questions going thru in mind. So I need a Broadband Connection but How much Data would be Sufficient(Unlimited/1Gb etc.) also, If I am thinking about laptop...you can use webcam to view each other.

I like your Concept and guess it will work too. So I can go for both if that would be fine.

    Really Appreciate your time!

    Broadband speed:
Speed of 512Kbps enough for video ( some buffering possible when both video and voice chat is done ) In Skype i don't find any difficulty.
Data usage depends on the length of each session and hours spent in a month. / minute (Video/voice/text etc ) average approx 1 MB/minute.
will have to test again. with Skype.

    2
    Tariff PLAN
    an unlimited plan is suggested.
In NCR MTNL is the major ISP.. Check with your neighbours.

    3.
    laptop/desktop purchase:
A laptop is for persons on the move and a Desktop for a fixed location.
Desktop can have a choice of LCD/size displays, and servicing etc easier. Cost saving also to be considered.
( Usually for desktop Rs 100 or Rs 200 and laptop Rs 600/ per visit !! charged by service engineers. Not updated after petrol/diesel/ price increase !!! )
Builtin battery in laptop is an advantage ,
but modem also should have battery back up !!!
Then UPS : add another Rs 10,000 extra !!
    4. personal contact with members
other more experienced knowledgeable members also will give suggestions , here.
Personal contact is not needed. unless absolutely required.
I only start the discussion, and give a quick response to a post.
( As my system is on standby for VOIP, laptop is also on )
Settting up chat etc ONline possible with TEAM viewer.
Info in this thread is also read by many users and will
    be useful to them also.

Yes MTNL is the Provider, Since the Unlimited Plan is Suggested which gonna cost 600+tax/M. between Desktop & laptop, I would go for laptop which is seems more Convenient to me for my Parents. Easy move, small and Free maintenance for 1year which can be extend with extra money. Yes LCD monitor can be Consider extra option with Mini Laptop.

and, I have searched Vonage Site and the Rates 14.99$/M for 1st three months than 25$ - Unlimited to Indian Mobiles.

So I guess, I need to buy this Laptop in any case even I am going to opt Voip or not so I will wait for others to Advice for Laptops Suggestion.

your 4th Point has been address Successfully thanks for your time

That was useful, all Mini Laptop comes with OS W7 Starter most of the time. Let's see if any other expert advice can be post on this thread.

My list is still with Dell as I don't see any big Difference. at present I am having Dell inspiron which is working good.

I don;t want to jump more than 15K on this laptop. Since I know it is going to be use for Chat/Browsing & Video calls.

    Thanks again.

Intel Atom - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

only Atom N5xx & D5xx are dual core atom.i too was surprised to see this netbook for 15800 because abroad netbooks with dual core atoms are available for a long time now but in india most companies still offer single core atom netbook only.btw there is a mistake in description on the link for this netbook as it does not have a USB 3.0 port but instead 3x USB 2.0 ports.

    detailed specification:

well ASUS is considered as one of the top brands in motherboards alongwith gigabyte & MSI.infact their gaming series motherboards which costs from 15000-25000 are considered the best by many in gaming community.if you would like to know about support just call the SMC International phone no. on their website & they should be able to tell you the expected repair/warranty time if any problem arise.

A mini laptop i.e. a netbook will be a the best option to buy for your parents as they are not going to do some software programming or play video games. I think both the Dell and HP are very good options, you can get any of these two.
