I have changed the title of your thread as it wasent very discriptive earlier.

My suggestion is you install Ubuntu and give it a try once.. I am using Ubuntu for the last few days and the speed and responsiveness I am getting is just too good.

Have a look at this thread : http://www.indiabroadband.net/linux/9913-wubi.html (Wubi)

You can post in that thread if you have any specific tasks you do using your laptop and are worried that linux wont support them.. we have many people here who are using linux will be able to help you out

Or in other case you can create a partition and install windowx xp so you would get an option at start up which operating system to use

Hope this helps

as admin said you can install linux ubuntu which is free of cost OS you can get more info on this here : Ubuntu Home Page | Ubuntu and if you really want to install xp only then you can install it as normal just keep in mnd to install xp over vista you need to make hard drive as unpartitioned and then you need to format drive then it will install xp for you where vista was installed

still i suggest you to go for linux
