    Question Configuring Sound in Ubuntu

In line with my initiative to chuck windows from my PC , i am trying to migrate all my jobs to Linux , which i am currently Dual Booting with windows ...

But i need sol for a few of my problems

Ok Here is my problem , I noticed that whenever i play Audio and Video in Ubuntu[Totem player] the sound is very very low . Normally in windows i install a Driver [SigmaTel Audio ] so that my speakers [Headphones and a Creative 5.1] work properly ... My sound card is integrated [inbuilt into the Motherboard] .... Do i need any drivers for this ?

For the Sound card i dont use any driver in windows , dunno if it needs one .....

I have tried maxing the volume in Totem Player to its fullest.... it still is too low

... ok.... in my case, the volume was never too low, and the volume keys on my keyboard work and bring the volume back to normal. using 8.04 LTS here... realtek ac 97 as detected on windows.
and i did not need to tweak the Alsa mixer since the above soln worked for me....

and u dont have the master volume control on the alsa mixer??

Go to Application -> Add/Remove & install Volume Control.

You can open Volume Control using this command also: gnome-volume-control

Right Click Volume Control tray icon -> Preferences -> Select PCM. And Check if the Volume is 100% (single click Volume Control tray icon).

    System -> Preferences -> Sound

Try different settings. And use "Test" sound to make sure it works. OSS mixer worked for me.

    Ok my next question

I nticed that in the volume control there is no way to set Bass or treble . This is also not present in Totem player .

No1 :In windows os both GOM and Windows media player have this setting as bass or WOW effect . Which media player has these control ?

No2 :Also i have this Sigma Tel Audio manager with which i can set my speaker config as 5.1 or Headphones interchangeably in xp

This i was unable to find any where in Linux . can u suggest some software in Linux??

    1. It's there in Volume Control -> Preferences.

    VLC Player have that feature.

    2. You can set audio channels in Totem Media Player Preferences. VLC Player also have it. Is that what you meant ?

When you select, it will add slider to the Volume Control main menu.
