i think you should go for backtrack.it is a bit power hungry,but it definitely brought back interest for me into linux..
there is lot of different stuff you can do with it.
you can very easilt carry it around in a pd.it is only 600mbs around!
Have u tried Xubuntu on your laptop? It is designed keeping low end pcs in mind. This is done with the help of XFCE desktop environment which has a memory footprint.

if u dont want a power/resource hungry versions than u should have to give a try to xubuntu it was also very good for newbies to linux also........

use BSD version its the best server class os which needs min 128 MB ram with minium config like web server, dns, database and desktop environment.
i have used Fedora 6 and it's really good...... now they hv released Fed8 beta i guess..... anything after Fedora5 is good....
