I have downloaded Open Suse Linux 11.1 yesterday. I shall give this a try some time.
I am using FREEBSD from past 5 years and its really a good operating system every in linux series i tried fedora, radhet, ubuntu its a light weight os, but freeBSD is good and enough fast. freeBSD is also used by Yahoo finance services as their backend server. its a enterprise based OS every in linux services. and very good for linux hosting companies.
Hi,
I use linux CentOS 5.2. I am into sys/network admin stuff. Basically studying stuff on my own. I just signed up here today. From another mailing list I am on, I have copied a post here titled "Linux Format free to download for 24 hours only" It has high-res pdf of the Linux Format magazine (current issue). Its only available for limited time I think. Also new users are not allowed to post links immediately(which I think is good) but since this was limited time only i've tried to give the link in obscured manner(spaces etc).
and yeah: "Hi All"
I was using it before 1 year Ubuntu but again i have switched it to XP. Windows looks more familiar to me than Linux
Hi, Cent OS is one of the best as for a server side is concerned. Almosst all linux users study on their own but help is available with few Internet search, so why bother! Have a good career in linux world
I forgot to mention my 1st linux exp. I was exited at linux when got the message from PCQuest and tried and failed many times during the 90s as was not having my own PC, But finally liked this OS once I got my own PC in 2000

I am using linux ubuntu from last more than 2 years now, now will give a try to opensuse
may be will download it tonite![]()
open suse is a nice distro......i used its 11 version.......now 11.1 is available.........
I started with red hat 7.3 cause it was linux with GUI. I liked this idea. This was like over a decade back then I think. Since then I've been using red hat, switched to suse later. Then Kept trying different flavours. I've tried out distrowatch's top 15 and using opensuse 11.1, kubuntu intrepid and kubuntu jaunty (4 diff PCs, intrepid on 2)
I use ubuntu
I've been using gnu/linux since 2005. Started with Mandrake (now known as Mandriva) and then moved on to Ubuntu. Currently using Ubuntu 8.04.2 (Hardy Heron) and Fedora Core 10 (Cambridge). I love the freedom, flexibility, stability, openness and vibrant user community that gnu/linux provides.
Hi all . I started my linux with RH 7.1 in year2002.That time no internet in our place.so no help was forthcomming.I could not get my cdrom to work. From that now I have kubuntu9.04 & mandriva2009.which are similar to M.S. windows and free too.
I use fedora-8 at work and fedora-9 at home. Made the transition in late 2008. Initially struggled for a few weeks getting things working right, but after that it's a breeze. I did enjoy the struggle, too - learnt quite a bit. Feeling relaxed now... no more crashes, no more format-reload-OS, no more frozen screen/keyboard, no more virii! I havn't used the other distros, but fedora seems to be a good start for M$ users - look & feel is similar, except that it's a lot more stable, predictable and configurable :-)
I also can do things which I never could do effectively in XP, like limiting my daughter's use of the net to specified hours etc. Other things like multiple desktops (even a choice of desktops - KDE, Gnome etc), compiz effects, make Windows look ancient! Another real advantage with linux is the wide support on open forums. I solved so many problems quickly with advice from the experts.
I still have XP as dual boot, but use it only when I'm forced to open my old electronic circuit files and the like. I also use Wine, but it has limitations. I even use msdos programs with dosbox on linux.
The down-side: Many people complain about games, but I'm not a game addict. In terms of other software support, CAD is a serious drawback on linux - be it autocad equivalent or electronic circuit simulation/artwork generation. I havn't found a good substitute to easytrax (an MSDOS program for PCB-artworking). Another issue is drivers. I have a Canoscan-4400F scanner at home which I cannot use in fedora because there is no linux driver available.
The next time I load an OS, I think it will be for upgrade and not due to a crash...

Ubuntu...
Looks we have many linux user in the forum, as per the poll!
not many cared to see the linux forum![]()
I have started linux with "Slitaz" a very light 24MB ISO Live CD in 2008. Initially struggled a lot to understand the things due to the impact of windows. After that I have tried many live cds and installed Open Solaris which I could not understand and removed from my system. After few months I liked PCLinixOS started duel booting with XP. Unfortunately the HDD was damaged may be due to the firmware issue in some seagate models. I have installed Ubuntu Studio 9.04 later and never succeeded to shut down the system properly due to the system hanging issues. Then I tried 64Studio 3.0 beta and it also started hanging frequently. Now I am switched to Ubuntu 9.04 jaunty few days back and I am very happy with this. Very stable OS. No hangups and very fast and feature oriented OS. Installed all applications and codecs available in Ubuntu Studio and I am enjoying this OS now. But still there are no proper alternatives available in linux for some windows applications like video converters for example.
The following like my help:
Hyper Video Converter KDE-Apps.org
any linux other than windows which can be had inside windows without booting and smaller
Oh Thank you. But there is a complaint that it is not working with Ubuntu-Gnome-Compiz combination the same I am using now. Anyway let me try this. Thanks again....
To use compiz fully you have to install simple-ccsm package(CompizConfig Setting Manager). Also ubuntu 9.04 has a kernel(some have said it blacklisted) suffering serious performance regression( booting in 1.5 seconds is no measur of performance) & if you are using intel driver you would have to tweak it.I use FreeBSD,ubuntu & will install lfs linux from scratch) when it will be available for x86_64 currently clfs is available in 64 bit. Also according to me every real linux geek have once in a life use & understand the Gentoo (many mistakenly say its dead but its a top 8 distro).Ubuntu is useful for people who prefer mac & windows. Also you can use wine (if you have enough knowledge you can run most major windows programs) ,crossoverlinux ,crossoverlinuxgames & cedega to run games etc.
