Default Ubuntu vote here from New Zealand..

I am a real fan of Ubuntu - I put it on the cheapest nastiest box I could get, with an awesome monitor the biggest flashest I could afford, and the machine is just so freaking cool.

It is mega fast to bootup, shutdown, never crashes, lazer fast, looks so much better than XT - I really wont be going back..

please specify your audio hardware. Most of the Linux distros install most of the device driver automatically.

most of the realtek chipset and most of the hi def audio controllers supported out of the box by most of the linux distro. you should have you driver installed automatically. Intel website says you mobo uses ATI RADEON XPRESS 200 Chipset, hi def audio inteface with realtek codec. technically your mobo doesn't installed with realtek chipset. ATI drivers are proprietary.

    please goto System->Administration->Restricted Drivers Manager/Proprietary Drivers/Hardware Drivers
activate the right one for your system

if still you don't get the audio device working, please post the hwinfo output.
    hwinfo --short
by default ubuntu doesn't come with hwinfo. so you might need to install it
    sudo apt-get install hwinfo

    UBUNTU is great Linux...

i had installed it sometimes back..

can someone please tell me one thing..

i have got ubuntu downloaded through internet, (their website) and now i want to install it such a way that it will be side by side with windows.. i mean i get the options Ubuntu and Windows 7 like i got the first time i installed with windows vista..

at that time(it was a free cd from them) i got options 1. install ubuntu 2. install ubuntu inside windows (which i chose)..

now that option is not coming in it.. it directly asks me to install ubuntu and there are options like varieties of hard disk space to choose, 2. kind of ubuntu to install viz. ubuntu kubuntu, kubuntu for lapp etc etc...

so please tell me if i install it on computer, will it be inside windows or will it be Ubuntu in place of windows 7..

note: i want to just check ubuntu, coz its faster with start up and browsing...windows 7 is prime choice for me..

No, it won't install inside windows 7, it won't install in place of windows 7 either. when you're taken to partition wizard, choose manual partition mode. you'll see your partitions with different color bar. every color represents a type and file system (like NTFS) and has it's legend. it's pretty easy to understand that. if you have free space install ubuntu on it else you may want to resize your existing windows partition to free up some space. don't worry, if your partition have enough free space (say double than the Linux partition you want to create), you won't loose a bit of data during the process. then you're good to go with rest of the installation.

Note: you may want to check if in manual mode you get the option to install ubuntu within windows partition. And please stay careful if you're going through manual partitioning.

    Thanks Vatzcar for the pains..

but i cannot understand, even now, that if even i install it manually(chosing the partition through the wizard) will it be installed inside windows??

i should have added one more important in my first post, which i am writing now, is that while installing ubuntu manually, i got the ubuntu folder made inside d drive( i didnt select c), there was the uninstall option, so i am thinking that it must be ubuntu inside windows, because linux doesnt support exe.

thanks to Lord Allmighty that ubuntu didnt install, as i was on edge internet which is slow and so it cannot connect to the ubuntu servers during installation and failed...

from your post it seems you chose windows partition when installing ubuntu. so it created one directory in your "D:\". don't worry, nothing will be installed inside windows, it'll use little space from your windows partition. only one way your windows installation could get wiped, if you choose to set your primary windows partition as ext3/ext4 FS and as '/' mount point. not to mention 'format' checkbox will be force checked. I'm pretty sure you won't go with that. any other way ubuntu will stay within it's directory (folder) and both the os will run on their way. both will have their boot image and your MBR (Master Boot Record) will have link to them.

it's always safe to create a seperate partition for each os as that'll save you from messing up with other or accidental deletion of system files. that's why I suggested you to free up some space from existing partition and create a new one for your ubuntu. moreover you Linux will run smoother and faster within it's warm-cozy FS.

and btw, ubuntu installation shouldn't fail due to unavailability of internet. it'll continue with local media, though later you'll face a massive jambo update in that case. probably something else went wrong with your installation.

I need Windows for that Veoh player, so i have it inside VirtualBox, keeps my drive 'untainted' as it were. Dual boot with Mint 9 (the refined Ubuntu) and Statler xfce.

And please, do reopen the poll, surely there must be thousands of us by now!

    Hanging in Linux, Ehh...?

If you have a particular software that freezes then you may want to check whether the software is from a stable branch or not. And if your entire OS is freezing randomly then you probably should be looking somewhere other than Linux for the root of the trouble. Memory(RAM) could be a good starting point, also you may want to check external video card if you have one. Of-course I'm assuming you're not using any beta distro.

In my personal experience of Linux usage I haven't encountered any freezing issue with any modern Linux distro (though I haven't tried more than ten distros)

I don't understand what you mean by saying "I have used linux and using linux". I am a user of linux for a long time I hesitate to use other OS now a days. You can find from archives that I become a full time user of linux (in office) some 3 years back. Today 90% of our office user are under linux and 100% the servers are. Nobody have any complaint, everybody is happy with what they got. Earlier there were many breakdowns because of virus / blocking server because of spam (DSS), etc. Now there is no such issue, the systems are running without any glitch.

I don't know what peculiar problem you are facing. I am very sure that it is not because of linux.

Because Linux is based on design philosophies (going back decades to the design of Unix as a multi-tasking system) where the operatating system protects itself and other programs from the action of a rogue or hung program, hangs and crashes are rare. That is, rare as in rare not as in impossible. I have certainly experienced a couple of Ubuntu crashes over the past year or so.

It's just a theory, but for anyone who thinks their system has frozen that their desktop has frozen. If that user's technical knowledge doesn't go any deeper than the desktop (and there is no reason that it should. An operating system should not have to be a hobby!) then it is about equivalent to they system freezing.

If you can handle a command prompt, ps and kill commands, it is possible that this situation can be rescued, and sometimes without the loss of all your unsaved work in different programs on that desktop. In Ubuntu, CTRL-ALT-F1 to F6 will give you dumb terminal logins CTRL-ALT-F7 give you your desktop.

There are also key sequences that allow a machine to be safely shutdown.

[There is a C "one-liner" (and one line is about as far as my C knowledge goes) that can slay some *nix machines. Roughly: main() {{ while ( 1 ) { fork(); }}. I just tried it. My Ubuntu system is a bit wounded, but still alive! ]

[ps ... it does nothing, but it takes up 100% resources with an infinite number of threads, all doing that nothing.]
