Why are you not switching to KDE 4.2?
Just noticed that you were using KDE 4.1 :w00t:

If I am not wrong then compiz(linux window decoration) has been enabled, but it is not configured properly. If the animation speeds and amount are not set properly then this lag is normal. Try changing these values in compiz config and the problem might be solved.

But if compiz has not been enabled, then I have no idea about why you are facing this lag.
About that distorted screen((like somebody scribbled on it with crayon)), it also happens for me but only when I enable transparency for a console window, and that problem is limited to that console window only, so I can live with that. Everything else is fine.
I have also used the KDE 4 desktop in SUSE, but no lag there too.
As you have 3Gs of RAM, I am assuming that you also have a good display card.

Mine is a 7600GS with 512MB DDR2 dedicated , and it works like charm. The compiz animations are just so cooooooooool :26:.

Even I have a pinnacle media center tuner, and believe me, while the TV is running, I activate the 3D cube, and TV shows the output in real time while rotating the cube.

My system is a bit old, the config is as follows,
    AMD athlon 64 1.8GHz-(OC-2GHz)
    ASUS k8v-x--VIA chipset----RAID-0,1
    2.5GB DDR 400,
    SATA-80+250 + IDE-20GB
    7600GS -512MB DDR2
Pinnacle media center (properly configured in LINUX)
    and so on.

    xp

    Mandriva 2008 X64------upgraded to Mandriva 2009

Well you can download many 64 bit linux CD and DVDs from there respective sites, like opensuse or Mandriva, otherwise serch in FTPs. You can get all those 64 and 32 bit and the beta and unreleased versions of almost all LINUX types. Try your luck.

I spend a number of nights crawling through FTPs in search of a good LINUX distro, with good download speed. The following are a few of them. Search for yourself and download what you want. I download 10 distros and only one works for me perfectly fine , and sometimes even none.

Lately I could not find the Powepack version of Mandriva in any FTP, but got it in torrents.

    Default No offence

no offence but to make it clear to everyone when it comes to linux UBUNTU is the real killer no matter what other distro give you ultimately you would want ubuntu. As far as compiz is concerned, not everyone likes it (but I like it). There is absolutely no problem installing anything. Plus you can customize it almost using anything.
