Default Please suggest a good Linux

    Hi ,

I want to download a Knoppix CD. I got this link, but it seems we need to download Bittorrent for this. I use utorrent. Please suggest a link from which I can download using utorrent.

Knoppix Linux, Download Knoppix Live CD or DVD, Get Documentation and Help

Earlier, I downloaded from another link. The CD doesn't work. So I thought of taking your help this time.

The above torrent has a really bad health. 0 seeders, and 4 leechers :w00t:

    Just download this torrent: KNOPPIX_V6.0.1CD-2009-02-08-EN

    And, start downloading Knoppix.
I don't think there would be any tracker problems. Or, if you face any, just shout here.

Somebody please suggest a good linux, the disk space required, advantages and disadvantages. Can we use linux as we do windows. Like can we burn CDs, download torrents, use download managers for better speed and queuing etc.

My friend told me I have to format the whole hard disk if i have some problem with linux. He says it is related to boot loader.I am planning to use Linux along with Windows.

I never used linux before. Any suggestions always welcome.

That would be a big task to list all that. I would recommend Ubuntu to you because....it will be better for you than most of the others in many ways. I know that you have the ability to look upon it on your own.
So, please try Googling about it for more information, because listing everything here would be a big task, atleast for me.

Please give the disk space required & suitable version as you might have used it before.

I am planning to use it in my I drive (4.86 GB). Is it sufficient?

You can go for Ubuntu 8.10 for now. And I would recommend you should have at-least a 10 GB partition for that. But, do remember that it's the minimum.

P.S: I am posting all these posts from my Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex.

It would be better to leave it alone. But, if you are lacking hard disk space, you may do that. But, please note that Windows will not be able to read the file system. So, you would be able to access those files only from Ubuntu and other OS that are able to read the file system.

Windows cannot read ubuntu particians but Ubuntu can read both NTFS and FAT.

    • first try a live CD version of Linux, as mentioned previously, knoppix is a good choice
    • for live distros like knoppix , you won't have to install anything, just burn the ISO to CD and boot from it.
    • You won't have to format your whole HDD, if you have trouble in LINUX.
    • Only thing you may have to do is to create a new MBR with windows CD, that's all(just pop in the windows CD, go to repair mode , and create a new MBR.)
    • Even you can use a LINUX from pen drive, read my blog on this forum for more info. If you have pen drive(1GB or more) or an external HDD, then you won't even have to waste a CD, you can create your own portable Linux from windows(no need to install anything).
    • info about whole list of LIVE Linux distros can be found here-->

LINUX installation on to a physical HDD is not a problem, the problem actually is the partitioning, so better try to understand the partioning first.

Two major partitions needed for a Linux installation are

    • root partition -also known as (mount point " / ")
    • swap -- this is the virtual memory used in Linux(same as pagefile in windows)(this partition is also optional but increases system performance and stability sometimes)
    • rest of the partitions are optional
Now a days almost all Linux distros come with NTFS support, so you can read all your windows data from inside of Linux. But writing on to NTFS partitions is a little bit different thing, read more to learn.

There are only two ways to learn anything:

    • learn how to jump a wall and then try physically
    or

    • jump a wall first, get a scratch, and then learn from it (my favorite)
    ======================================

    • The most important thing is unless until you try by yourself, everything else is useless. You need to take some amount of risk. Back up your important data before installation.
    • Never ever try to restart your machine in between the installation(RESET should be the last option), if your PC appears to be stalled, give it ample amount of time before you press the RESET button.(possibility of this situation is 1/1000th)

I am already downloading Knoppix. Will start downloading Ubuntu once it is finished. A word in time can be more useful than an army. And am getting it here.

I have Knoppix now (still to try). Just read about Ubuntu live CD in one of the posts. Which is the most comfortable Live CD. Please suggest.

Knopix live CD is more popular. I've tried Ubuntu and Fedora also. No much noticeable performance difference.

I have downloaded the Knoppix CD. Apart from the CD image there are a few files also. Last time also when I downloaded the CD, I burned the image to CD and tried. But it failed.

How should i use other files. I am posting a screen shot. Please give your opinion.

what was the failure exactly , did it fail during booting or what ?

    Do not waste CDs ?

    Check pendrivelinux.com
for more portable OS solutions (and how to create a flash drive knoppix) .

I burned the CD (not this one, this I just downloaded). Inserted it, restarted the system. I started something like a minor installation or something. Then it said some error or something is missing (sorry did it a month back).

As they gave these files in torrent download, there might be some use for it. otherwise they may not have included those. Can you identify these other files and how to use them. Or I simply burn the disc and try ?

Sometimes the image gets corrupted while downloading through torrent.
And why did you prefer torrent, download it from http or ftp directly, if you are afraid of the fact that the download may be interrupted , then use IDM or DAP. It would be definitely faster.

Those md5 and asc files are not actually needed for the OS, they are provided for the integrity check of the download.

Thanks. Can burn it without problem now. Will update here once done.

Can it read my hard disks automatically. I have heard we need to mount them in Linux. Is there anything else I should take care while using Knoppix Live CD.

I use IDM. If I am not mistaken by using http and ftp, you are referring to pages like download.com.(Please correct me if I am wrong).

Yes , it can detect your HDDs without any problem(tested on two laptops and two desktops with SATA, IDE and external HDDs).

Yes , the normal downloads from websites.
    ========================

This knoppix comes with compiz-fusion and I was even able to see cool 3d desktops on an HP laptop. But my desktop was not lucky enough, it needed x11 drivers for my nvidia.

I'd personally prefer SuSE Linux. Easy and beautiful albeit it could be a memory hogger if you choose to install the default gui packages. I've got a barebones SuSE11.1 running on my pc and acting as a gateway/firewall/dns cache/traffic shaper and it's rock solid

    Hi,

Posting this from my live knoppix CD. Can it remember any settings. Does it put anything on my pc to remember what I did ?

I cannot create playlist or enque songs. How to do it?

What happens is that when I use open or add, I cannot find my hard drive in the menu.
