Good ! Before you install Linux, try Live CDs like Puppy Linux or Mint, then if you like them (of course you will !) you can go for installation. For live cds, google them and follow the instructions. Best of luck !

There are so many kinds of linux operating systems available now a days and they are called distributions. Puppy Linux is also one distribution among them. Check the puppy linux website for more details at puppylinux.org

Ubuntu is one of the most popular and stable linux distribution which offers a large variety of application packages. You dont have to download Ubuntu OS if you want to give a try by using Live CD. Go to ubuntu web site and you can order a free live cd and it will be dispatched to your address within 20 days approx.

Wubi is a windows application which can be used to install Ubuntu OS in windows. Check this link to know more about wubi. wubi-installer.org/faq.php

My advise is if you are using pirated windows start using linux immediately. Its totally free and you dont have to pay for any application.

    Happy Linux

    • Download Wubi from this link: http://releases.ubuntu.com/9.04/wubi.exe (for Ubuntu 9.04).
    • Place both files (wubi.exe and ubuntu ISO) in the same directory
    • Open wubi.exe and follow installer wizard
    • After the process is finished, reboot and and select Ubuntu
    • Follow the simple setup wizard to and you are done
    Wubi Installer Screen

    Installation drive

Choose a drive to install ubuntu. Make sure it's not the same as Windows and has more than 8 GB free space.

    Installation size

Choose the desired size allowed for Ubuntu to utilize. 8 GB is the recommended minimum space for Ubuntu installation. If you are not going to use that drive for anything else, then select a higher drive size.

    Desktop environment

Select which Ubuntu OS you are going to install (Ubuntu, Kibuntu etc). If Wubi didn't find the correct iso file, it will automatically download and install according to the settings you chose.

    Username & Password

Username & Password are required each time to use Ubuntu. You can set this to automatic afterwards if you want.

    To Uninstall Ubuntu

To uninstall Ubuntu, go to Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel and uninstall just like any other windows applications.

I don't remember exactly. But if you have already downloaded the iso file, then it might take upto 10- 15 minutes to create/copy the necessary files and less than 10 minutes to complete the setup inside Ubuntu (after rebooting in to Ubuntu).

Any directory is fine (even desktop). Remember to keep a copy of the Ubuntu iso file in another directory. The Wubi will use the iso file and delete it when you uninstall Ubuntu.

    Thanks for the repo.

If you only need Linux on the system, then you have to burn it to a CD and boot (like installing windows). Wubi is an application used to install Ubuntu inside Windows partition.

It's a little hard to install Ubuntu directly. And is even harder to remove/uninstall. Wubi will do most of the steps automatically and is easier to remove/uninstall too.

    Refer this guide: http://www.indiabroadband.net/showthread.php?p=51326

Wubi is the utility which allows linux be installed in windows just like a normal software, there is no separate partision required for linux. This useful for expermentation but not recommended for regular use
can i use both windonws XP and linux ubuntu with wubi
Yes the very purpose of the utility is that only.

I have about 10 years of exp in using linux almost all the popular distros I have used throughout. Yesterday I got Fedora 11 but nothing I found new except ext4 support, KDE 4.2, openExchange which most of us home users don't require. As per my experience, I strongly recommend Mandriva/PClinuxOS for newbies as the control panel and menu interface is very much like windows. Almost all the basic setup can be done from here. Also the strong point of Mandriva is driver support for a vast hardware. In other distros you have to download and install the drivers in order to use the hardware.

Answer to your other question: Puppy Linux is another linux distro like Ubuntu, Mandriva, etc.

Okey. Try and let us all know your experience. I hope you like it but it may take some time to understand the OS.

This is where linux makes the difference. You will find help every where for any problem. Recenty I am switched to Ubuntu 9.04 from XP and I am happy with this. You will find almost everything in linux which is available in windows but the only thing is you have to find where it is available in your distribution.

    Enjoy.....

@ money_ms, I tried installing Ubuntu 9.04 (32 bit) using Wubi and the whole installation process didnīt take more than 10 minutes.
