its free os and not paid os like microsoft windows.
their is a complete set of softwares for existing one
eg:
ms office 07 -open office
internet explorer -firefox
outlook -evolution
bit torrent -transmission torrent client
windows media player-movie player
important all are free ware.
pros:
1.all softwares are freeware you can download them free of cost and they are open source too..
2.you can share it with your friends too
3.Does not reqire ANTI VIRSUSand firewall
but they are available if you want them for free

When using the term free software - they specifically point out the freedom/liberty that comes along with FLOSS (Free, libre open source software ) let alone the price(Its little bit philosophical in nature)
for general public anything that starts with free is always welcome because it's the price that matters to them.
