Ubuntu and fedora are many other Linux based OS are completely free to download and does not need to bear licensing fees like windows OS. As compared to windows, linux is mostly used in small business hosting and much secured than windows. Though, most of the professional businesses use Microsoft based applications hence, prefer windows. However, the linux offers you much reliability and security from malicious programs.

Almost all linux distros are free to download as it is an OSS, but there are few with commercial support and some features added in their specific distros which are not available in the open source version. But the brain or heart (what you call) of a linux distro I mean the kernel is OSS. All distros will distribute this kernel though the version differs from distor to distro. The other software and modules are specific to distros. Some distros will release only stable kernel and supported software where as some release even the beta and in some cases the alpha to in their release.

Where as in windows world it is the only one and closed door at that. Where as in linux anybody can contribute to improve it as per their capacity as it is an OSS. M$ started releasing the pre release version for testing by users nowadays, fully realising that actual user testing is very different then their test team. You can definitely see the improvements in their recent versions (if you are a windows user, I am not, dumped log before) because if this.

But linux versions are more stable as right from begining

Thanks for the complete information about OSS, matrix. I really liked the way you have explained it.
