I heard rave reviews about Ubuntu. Many tell it is almost like Windows but free. Will download it next week and try.

Why Ubuntu Server for a desktop PC?
You can download (or request for a free CD) Ubuntu Desktop here: Get Ubuntu - Download, request a CD, or buy on CD/DVD | Ubuntu

I believe that a review of Ubuntu's Desktop Edition would have been better to come first, as many look forward to it.

But Wine might be able to run only some of the Windows softwares, and don't expect it to run the games steadily.

Avoid requesting for a CD if you can download it because it costs Canonical money to send you CDs. That feature is meant for those who cannot download the iso's easily. Also, if possible, save Canonical some bandwidth by downloading using torrents if possible. Unlike other some torrents, using these are actually legal.

I have got a CD with the server version (64bit). It is a true 64bit one and could not be installed on desktop C2D systems, will require Zeon based server class system. But there is a 32bit download available which should be installable on desktop C2D systems.

There is a difference between platforms amd64(which c2d's also includes) and ia64(Intel server platform procee's).Debian,I think has ia64 optimized option.

Are you part of the Ubuntu developer community? As a full time linux user I am in great trouble as my management wants all the desktops be installed with linux. Almost all complain why you are using linux because of that we are in trouble as they are not comfortable with linux.
