Select For Linux users zip file. No changes in Modem settings.
Your unit will be similar to WA 3002_g1.
MTNL Delhi has advised to use LAN1 and Lan4 ports for BB connection.

If you can give the version of ubuntu it will be more helpful, usually it will be System->Preferences->Network Connections and configuring the "Wired" and "DSL" tabs (This is ubuntu 10.4) even if it is a different version it should be very similar.
In case you have configured in PppOE mode in modem, just the wired tab need to be configured (assume your network card is detected and the necessary module is available)

I have connected through USB and using Ubuntu 10.04
The USB drivers may not work for Ubuntu. try the ethernet port option.
USB may work for XP OS., provided you have the correct drivers.
When I installed Ubuntu on my machine a few months ago, the ethernet connection to the modem just ...worked!
I recall having a little problem in getting it to accept fixed parameters, rather than using DHCP from the modem, but that was just refinement/configuration for my net.
Excellent reference in that link: thank you.
One of the nice things about Unix/Linux is the extent to which configurations are held in plain-text files, which are very easy to change, and to document why you did what you did with a # comment line so it doesn't baffle you later.
Easy to keep history too. Before editing,
# cp interfaces interfaces.0
in the future, you can go for .1 .2 .3 and so on.
If vi is daunting, and it can be to beginners, gedit is much like using Windows Notepad. I think you have to be root to edit these files/save in this directory, so you won't be able to just start gedit from the menu or desktop.
Leaving out the password prompt:
$ cd /etc/network
$ sudo cp interfaces interfaces.0
$ sudo gedit interfaces

I am too using Linux and my connection provider has setup my internet connection to computer.
As for ISPs like BSNL and Airtel, there is no change in settings with respect to change in OS. If in PPPoE, it is just like an active LAN and if dialer, simply make one.
An annoying feature of Ubuntu is that it downloads a great deal of stuff during the installation process. For a start, the default mirror for India is not very fast, but, during the install, we have no choice.
The process means that it needs a working LAN before the install starts, so if the modem/router has been in bridge mode, best change it to router mode before starting, and also enable DHCP (most people use that anyway).
With those provisos, a Ubuntu install will create a working LAN connection during the install, use it, and it should still work when you log in.
