I have a Ubuntu installl on 32 GB USB with persistent mode based on what I could find on the net.

First created two additional ext2 partitions of 8 GB each and renamed them as casper-rw and home-rw.

Then downloaded Universal USB Installer. Then using Universal USB installer, installed Ubuntu on the usb drive.

Then overwrote the syslinux.cfg with the following

    "default persistent
    label persistent
say Booting an Ubuntu Persistent session...
    kernel /casper/vmlinuz
    append file=/cdrom/preseed/ubuntu.seed boot=casper persistent initrd=/casper/initrd.lz quiet splash noprompt --"

    works without problem.

Get a Linux iso file and make your USB bootable, using either a third party software or command prompt. Once USB is bootable, restart yous system with USB plugged in and go to boot optiond (based on your system, press F8 or F12). There make USB your first option and exit the setup. Now, it boots into Linux and asks you to whether install or run a demo mode. Chose demo mode and you're ready to use your Linux.

If you use my method at post #3 of creating two ext partitions and overwriting the syslinux.cfg, you can have a full version linux running from the USB drive, with all your programs installed on it. No need to operate in demo mode only.
