that i know. and i have tried KUbuntu on Live DVD. looks awesome.
however, when i tried to install onto a pendrive, it lands me on a "very limited shell". dunno what else to do.

as i said. a lot is possible. but Nimblex worked for me out of the box. and ease of use is what i was lookin for.

    thanks for the reply, though.

Good to see another gentoo admirer.

Yes it has died down in many respects, but still the fastest distribution around.

I think main problem was docs which at one time were renewed & also the websites had many old pages. Monthly newspaper is quite old there.

Synaptic package distribution is same in all ubuntu version. Its just that they might have added some repositories.

It is just beginner friendly in interface.

The best that I have tried is PCLinuxOs. It is easily configurable and quite fast. BTW, can any of the Linux experts suggest a Linux that can be installed within Windows 7 - 64 bit version ? I tried Linux Mint, it wouldn't install ! So, I haven't tried Ubuntu. Thanks.

I have tried various distos like fedora, redhat 9.0 (still using it), ubuntu(still using it), kubuntu.
I feel that any debian based distro is the one to go with, the most important is the apt.

I like Ubuntu and LinuxMint too.
But OpenSUSE is neat too, though the package management is through Yast, another nifty tool.

I have tried using a build of a bootable USB version. I forgot the name, I think it was Damn Small Linux or something. That was awesome for repairing PC's which is what I do sometimes.

I didn't mean which distribution that you use(d). I know most of you do not use a Linux distribution either regularly or occasionally. However many people might have tried one or other distribution through Live CDs.

If your favorite distribution is not in the list, kindly post it in this thread.

    Kind Regards,
    Pothi Kalimuthu.

i have used puppy linux now for more than a wek and it is really gr8...almost every applications that 1 needs on a normal laptop packed in abt 100 MB...n u can always add 2 the package..

    Default Slax!

Cant believe nobody mentioned slax yet! Slax is the best portable linux distro ever! ~180mb has everything you need from a pocket distro. KDE3 and video codecs by default!!

    Default Puppy Linux

Also surprising to see that none has mentioned about Puppy Linux. It is simple and can be used from pen drive without any installation whatsoever and has almost all useful applications

I am using Mandriva ,and have been using it for last 3 years
Used ubuntu too, but didn't like the part where it limits root user access, although I found how to trick it to give root access , but still, somewhere I felt like it is not for users who need advanced access to more hidden corners.
But ubuntu software repository is the best I must say
    next is Mandriva
and they both have excellent software managers.

As I said, ubuntu is a bit less accessible, although ubuntu has a more customized clone known as Super OS.

I have always liked heavier OS distros, so prefer a big OS with lots of stuff.

Super OS is by far the best live distro with support for persistent changes.
Sabayon is another OS I like, for both portability and to be used as installed system.

Fedora used to be good, but now it kind feels amateur.

Debian is 50-50, not good not bad.

Backtrack has its own place, so is knoppix.

BTW got myself an LCD TV and a PSP lately but lost my Corby PRO.

Need a new fone, suggest one with slide out or foldable QWERTY[must], GPS and Wifi, preferably 3G.
post suggestions on any existing thread and give link here .

See you later, gonna crash now.

People from NCR. contact me please, need some friends here, I am in Sec-19, Noida now.

Does it? Haven't come accross that. Yes, by default it does not allow root login, and it encourages "sudo" for all admin commands. That can be tedious, but if one is going to spend a while needing root acccess there is always "sudo su" or "sudo su -"

It does allow you. But you should be able to trick the OS for the same.
    ------------------------------
At logon you would have to get in to console using your current account.
Then try to login to root, which is allowed through command line as you said.

Then use startx to start GUI.

If you are unable to login as root, then you shall have to break your system down and to fix it the system will automatically provide you root login at start up. Its a bit risky, but no pain no gain. If are experienced enough then, no problem. That's the time you unlock root account.

You are in as root in GUI.

For me, it would be no gain. I don't need root permissions to browse e-mail and the web, which is what I spend most of my computer time doing. The fact that I have years of experience working with Unix, but that it was some time back, makes me a more dangerous user than the complete beginner who doesn't even half-remember the commands! I don't mind the system protecting itself from me to the extent it does.

I do find sudo a bit tedious, but, usually, by the time I think I should have su-ed, it is too late!

Suggest a tool or an OS please. Although there are many ways but never could I find a fool proof way.

whole hard drives have vanished in an instant,
he he from me too. I was backing up the office firewall one day, and wrote to the disk device name instead of the tape. How can anyone be that stupid? I am living proof. Of course, i realised almost immediately, but that was too late. It was a Friday evening. i went home, got drunk with my girlfriend, then spent the weekend installing Solaris, which I had never done before, then installing Checkpoint, which I had also never done before, and restoring and checking the firewall rules which, thankfully, I had always kept as simple as possible. Yes, it all worked by Monday, and with only one or two calls to the support desk.

Sorry, never worked with bootloaders --- until Linux brought grub into my life quite recently.
