    Default The Best Distribution That You've ever TRIED...

    Hi all,

    Which is the best distribution that you've ever *tried*?

    I didn't mean which distribution that you use(d). I know most of you do not use a Linux distribution either regularly or occasionally. However many people might have tried one or other distribution through Live CDs.

    If your favorite distribution is not in the list, kindly post it in this thread.

    Kind Regards,
    Pothi Kalimuthu.

    Ubuntu has started increasing its market,the most wonderful feature and the reason for its growth is that, it gives out the OS for free and OF course the fantastic Visual Effects.They send the Cd's to your home for Free....
    Fedora is good too but they don't have this free distribution feature

    Request your free Cd's here

    One beautiful thing that i observed in Ubuntu or probably any other linux operating system is that once you see the you-tube video it will be stored in the temp area ..So before you close the you-tube window make sure you save a copy of this file somewhere else..you don't have to download the video seperately!!!!!

    Well it seems this thread is all about ubuntu.

    I must say i really like ubuntu but its not the best linux os for me.

    The best distribution for me is Gentoo. Most of you might not have heard of it probably. The reason behind my preference is sheer speed. Gentoo is one of the fatest linux os around. Much much faster than ubuntu, fedora, mandrivia and suse. Well I used to be crazy about linux during my college days.

    Cant really say that a particular distro is the best, a specific distro has features that appeal to a specific group of users who are interested in a particular functional component/area of the OS.

    For eg. Ubuntu is widely used as desktop OS, but it is rarely considered as an OS for enterprise or mission critical servers.

    Redhat/Fedora is preferred in corporate environments bcoz of :

    • SELinux
    • NFS
    • Samba
    • Compatibility Libraries
    • Development Packages
    • Compilation Tools
    • Programming Tools & Editors
    • +1000 other Native Applications

    someone like me who needs to use tools like GIT or CVS will always stick to Fedora
    for daily work use no matter how fast/light Ubuntu is over Fedora....I would call Ubuntu as a "weekend OS"

    P.S. : this is my opinion, others will differ. Absolutely no offence meant

    in my openion the best destro must have many of the features like
    * Long term support
    * must provide maximum no: of packages
    * most stable
    * best online support

    So I think Debian is the best. It comes with all the above described features.
    Even Ubuntu is a Debian based distro.

    The new versions of ubuntu have option to install from within windows into any drive within an image file (means no need to format the partition and u can store any other files normally like any other windows drive).

    and it includes an uninstaller as well, cool na.

    Jus got my Kubuntu with KDE cd which i ordered abt 20 days back, installed easily, but i could'nt connect in PPP/bridge mode.And the included audio player does'nt support mp3

    I also liked the linux available at pendrivelinux.com , they are really easy to deploy. Just unzip into usb, run a batch file to make it bootable and restart

    And a special mention to SLAX coz its very minimalistic and boots fast.

    Thanks for the suggestion

    I am already using Ubuntu now... installed it using wubi suggested by smoothvibes and it seems to work ok.

    Dont know why but I only use Ubuntu when I feel like getting a bit adventeurs or feel like doing something out of the ordinary.

    There are just too many features in Windows that I use and Ubuntu doesnt have that an instant switch is just impossible for me although I am trying to find alternatives but it will take time for me to switch.

    I hate windows to the core but I cant quit using it either
