    Thumbs up Ubuntu Difficulties

    Hi all,

I hope all of you reading this are either using Ubuntu or willing to try it.

I'm sure you may have thousands of difficulties while using it. At least I had (however overcame those in the mean time).

For example, one person said in another thread, that ubuntu needs terminal to update and for other reasons.

What I can say now is, you could do all the things without using terminal. At least I could guide you how to do without terminal.
So post your Ubuntu queries here. I'll surely try to help to the best of my abilities.

    Kind Regards,
    Pothi Kalimuthu.

why do you want to create a dialup connection on your system when you are already using a router, your router must be configured to send username and password for authentication know.

there is no need to create a dialup but still if you want to create then you can go to terminal and can use this command,
    sudo pppoeconf
this is a command to create a dialup on linux OS and works good on ubuntu. It will guide you through a wizard under terminal only

Do remember if you are not logged into ubuntu as admin then you need to type command as
    sudo pppoeconf

next time onwards whenever you want to connect this connection just go to teminal and use this command to connect
    sudo pon
    and to disconnect
    sudo poff
    hope it will help you

Yeah... it certainly helped me to understand precisely what I'm doing... Thanx a lot! I figured it out yesterday itself by looking in the help section of ubuntu...

My router/modem isn't configured in PPPoE mode.... Its in bridge mode... In windows I used a PPPoE dialer to connect to internet... I enter username/password in that dialer only... Its not in the router/modem...

Well now I've to log-in windows to write some dvds... I'm sure ubuntu can do it... but I don't have much time now to understand it myself... u throw some light on it plz...

catch ya in a while from windows....

    Hi,
Go to "Ubuntu Help Center", click that _?_ button at the top. Then go to "Music, videos and photos" then click the 6 th point (Burn CDs and DVDs). If anyone of them aren't installed by default, install them by going to Applications -> Add/Remove or to System -> Administration -> Synaptic Package Manager. In either cases, just type the name of the application in the search box. You'll have it in a flash.
    Good Luck!

Yeah.. I'm connected from windows itself...

I don't exactly remember the error... but after that code... it scans my ethernet & wireless connection... & says something like no connection is found on both... If u want I'll post the exact output later when I restart it next...

Ok so i put it in my drive and rebooted... i selected the try option, first the orange progress bar kept rotating, then it started loading up, after it was fully loaded the screeb turned blank

i waited another 2-3 mins, but nothing happened. I once again repeated the process but still the same....

Can any1 tell me how much time it takes to boot from cd in live mode on a p4 machine with 1.2gb RAM?

Screen going blank is NOT normal.

Turn off acpi before booting and let us know if you still have the same issue.

ok no res... but tryin again...

So i disabled acpi.. and yes it startd right away!! man i was impressed!! its so easy to use too.. i was gonna post from it if only i had remembered my ip config ...

some querries, 1 can i install my intel graphics drivers on it? and my audio drivers? i was not able to listen to any songs or play any movie on it cause of some missing codecs, can i install some codec pack or will it automatically ge the codecs if i connect to the net?
xp seems outdated in front of it!!

Regarding graphics: In my ubuntu, my nvidia driver was installed automatically during the first update. I'm sure it would happen to all the graphics drivers, if you've enabled third-party software updates.

Regarding codecs: I'm sure you could install them too, if you've enabled third-party software sources. Here, one needs to do it manually. There is NO automated installation.

Audio: It would work just fine without doing any changes. Only difference that everybody notices is the volume which is bit lower than what is in windows. But nobody bothers much about it nowadays, because most have got _amplifiers_.

hmm... and i forgot to mention one more thing, when i gave the turn off pc command from the system menu, what it did in the end was switch off all my hard drives, while the display was still showing the ubuntu logo and asking me to take cd out and close tray.... i had to then switch off the cpu by long pressing the power button...

was this something to do with the turned off acpi?

i wasn't able to test out the audio as nothing wud play... i think i'l install the thing from inside windows when i clear out some stuff from my drives... then i'l really try it out ....

ok n i was just searching how to get a firewall n antivirus (avira) running on it.. n what i found was very confusing commands or something for that?! is there no simple way to install the stuff? what does the add/remove programs do in ubuntu?
