Gerald's Game, released in 1992 is a psychological horror novel by Stephen King. Unlike most of the works done by King there is almost no hint of the supernatural. Instead, the story pf this novel goes into a woman's repressed sexual memories and the unhappy marriage resulted from these memories.
The story begins with Jessie Burlingame and her husband Gerald. They are sitting in the bedroom of their solitary cabin located in a lonely place in western Maine. They have gone their for an off-beat romantic weekend.
Gerald, the husband is a rich and successful lawyer with an aggressive personality. Gerald has found a way to reinvigorate the couple's sex life. He resorts to handcuff Jessie to the bed. Jessie has been participating into the game before, but suddenly this time she balks.
Gerald handcuffs her and starts to crawl on top of her. She protests but he thinks of it as a part of the game and keeps teasing her sexually. Frustrated by his behavior, Jessie decides to do something to stop her. In her frustration she kicks him hard in the groin and causes him to have a heart attack ad he falls off the bed immediately getting killed.
Jessie is now alone in the cabin. She is unable to move or even summon for help. There is nothing that she can do but wait and hope that someone shows up soon.
This novel is very different in the respect, that it does not involve any supernatural happening; instead it looks deep into the fears of a human being when put in circumstances beyond her control.
The book is highly regarded by king’s fans and critics alike. It is one of his most different and yet popular books. It is easily available all over the world in paperback editions at a very fair price.
