The Fantasy genre has been largely dominated by English writers. One of the rare exceptions in the genre is Inkworld.
Inkworld is a series of three fantasy novels. The trilogy has been written by the German author Cornelia Funke. The whole trilogy comprises of Inkheart released in 2003, Inkspell released in 2005 and Inkdeath released in the year, 2007.
The Inkworld books tell the varied adventures of a teenager Meggie Folchart. Meggie’s whole life changes in a dramatic fashion when she realizes that both she and her father, a bookbinder named Mo, possess an unusual ability of bringing characters from the books into the real world. They can do so by simply reading the books aloud.
The trilogy is mostly set in Northern Italy, and the parallel world of the fictional Inkheart book. The central story arc of the Inkworld trilogy is concerned with the magic of books, the characters and creatures in the books and the art of book reading.
The trilogy was originally released in the German-speaking areas of Europe, with the release of the first novel Inkheart in 2003. Since then the books have gained huge popularity and have also been critically acclaimed. The trilogy has been declared a commercial success all over the worldwide.
The English translation of the third book known as Inkdeath was done by Anthea Bell. It was released in the October of the year 2008. In 2004, Funke sold the rights of the film to all three books to the film studio, New Line Cinema. Thus far, the first book has been made into a motion picture that is to be released in January 2009 in the whole region of North America.
This is one trilogy that no fan of the fantasy genre should read the Inkworld trilogy.
