    Wink Gmail backup methods

Gmailís e-mail loss last week gave me a bit of a scare and made me realize I actually donít back my e-mail up that much. I used Thunderbird in the past and thereís a bunch of Windows-based back-up programs available, but Iím a mac user. Also made me think about whether to choose about cloud-based backups or local backups. What do you think?

If your e-mails are very important to you then save them locally and on some offsite server as well to be sure that you wont loose them.

I started using Yahoo! Mail from 1998. I started using GMail as well from 2007. Till today, I have never lost a mail from either service.

It is not a guarantee that your mails would be safe. The best way to keep them safe is to forward all your important mails from gmail to yahoo and vice versa. It is less likely to loose both the accounts at once. Thousands of Gmail accounts were hacked some time ago and people lost their data. Google is not accountable because they dont charge you for their mail (If you havent subscribed to their enterprise solution) and same with Yahoo or other e-mail providers.

I have always maintained that any data that you have stored at only one place is as good as lost. You need to have important data backed up else it is just a matter of time when you loose it. This is why websites run on Raid configurations so that if one of two disks fail no data is lost and they can just take out the bad disks and push in new ones. Besides this most webmasters take hourly backups especially those who have a busy website where content is posted frequently.
