@rlove, seriously speaking, without knowing what you like or don't, it is difficult to suggest. But I also suggest starting with Harry Potter as those books are easy to read and yet captivating to adults also.
J R R Tolkien is very tough to digest. I read his books way back in 1988. I felt that there was too much poetry with prose.

My course book
Having read Charles Dickens , RLS , Hardy , Tolkien , Conan Doyle , Jules Verne ,H.G.Wells & GBS it has become very difficult for me.
Harry Potter books don't have that much originality. Her books are from Enid , Star wars & others. Thats why it will not figure in my top ten.
Thats true mate. She's stolen from everyone. She's taken scripts and names from dicken, tolkien etc. There was a old manual from LOTR written by tolkien, whose character names or family tree names appear in the Harry Potter series. C.S lewis is also copied from.
I am a die hard fan of Star wars saga. But my first love is LOTR. But you got to admit no in recent times has caught the imagination of children and adults alike like Rowling has done.

That I accept but SW is not going to die that easily. It will remains for more decades as it is far more extended. So will middle earth.
