Default Chennai becomes the first WIFI enabled city

Zylog Systems India Limited, has announced the launch of WIFI based service under the brand-name Wi5 broadband services in Chennai. The Wi5 services was inaugurated by Karuna Sagar, IPS, DIG, Armed force, Chennai on 14th June. This WiFi service will enable customers to access high-speed wireless broadband connectivity through their laptops, desktops or mobile devices by subscribing to Wi5s service on the move.

Zylog has obtained a category A internet service provider license to operate in all of Indias DoT circles. Zylog will complete full wi-fi coverage of Chennai in the next 12-15 months and in the next 24 months, similar WiFi services will be made available in cities such as Bangalore, Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad and Kolkata enabling customers access these services at any of the Wi5 zones across these cities.

In the initial phase, the company has rolled out the wi-fi services in Besant Nagar, Adyar and parts of Ashok Nagar and T Nagar of Chennai. It has also enabled seamless wi-fi connectivity on the IT corridor from Madhya Kailash to Siruseri. Called as the "Metro wi-fi", Zylog's wi-fi model will work like the telephony network.

The service works by the setting up of intelligent wi-fi nodes atop select buildings across the city, making the area a Wi-fi zone. This essentially means that every house will not need a separate router to gain wi-fi internet access. However, users will still need a wi-fi-enabled laptop or personal computer or a separate wi-fi card to access this service. This wi-fi connection will work through nodes, which will be installed across the city. This means you can access your internet anywhere in the city without the need of a router. One just needs to log in to the "Wi5" website to be online.According to the Company since users will log into the "Wi5" website, their network will be secure and the chances of someone hacking into the user's IP would not be possible.

The packages has been priced at Rs 550 per month, for an unlimited plan at a download speed of 1 MbPS, Rs 1,000 at 2 MbPS and Rs 1,750 at 4 MbPS. The price is inclusive of service tax.

Unless they are sincerely worried about misuse, they would probably use some unique ID which a wifi card may have, i dunno if wifi have sth like mac id.
