Default Need best possible wireless internet while travelling all over India

    Hello Friends,

I am a resident of Pune, Maharashtra and am about to embark on a nation wide backpacking tour for a year starting July.

I will carrying my netbook and would want a wireless internet connection that would serve me in the remotest of towns and villages.

I guess the three main competitors in this area are Tata, Reliance and BSNL.

Though BSNL seems to have the best coverage with Reliance coming in a close second, BSNL has a lot of hassles regarding registering etc.

Q1) I have heard that if i take the high speed broadband and i am in a location which does not have a high speed tower it will switch to the normal speed dial up broadband. Is it true? And so would you recommend taking the high speed broadband?

Q2) From coverage and convenience point of view which is the best company to take the broadband from?

This is something I would also like an answer to, since I, too, am currently looking for a wireless ISP in India. Reliability is of paramount importance to me. Will someone having the necessary knowledge kindly respond to this thread?

Edit: Note to Vishal - what Netbook do you have?

Thank you, essbebe. May I ask for a bit more clarification, please?
I shall be in Kolkata and Delhi proper, so that towers/connection should not be a problem at either place. My parents have BSNL telephone connection at home (Kolkata). So if I understand you correctly, for the ADSL BB connection from BSNL, I would need an ADSL Modem (purchase/rent?), right? So where does the prepaid card come in?

Or, I simply need a datacard, such as the BSNL 3G card (EVDO), is that right?

Sorry if my questions sound stupid.

    @suiraqua

    (A)
Please confirm you need Internet connection BOTH at Delhi and Calcutta.
    (B)

Confirm whether you intend to use a laptop/netbook. (computer)
    (C)

    Mention Model /make.
    (D) BSNL links given below. Check Tariff plan pages about prepaid card via bsnl landline
    (E) need adsl modem (for D) (and wifirouter for Laptop optional if LAN mode available ).

    I would get two things:

    First:
Reliance netconnect broadband plus dongle with 18GB data transfer valid for 6 months For Rs3000 (prepaid)
Coverage is great and almost all Urban areas including some rural areas have 3.1mbps speed coverage and where its not available you get a 150kbps speed which is alright for most things we all do but it would just take a little more time and uploading pictures can obviously wait till you get to an area with better speed

    Second:
Prepaid Airtel 3g sim card in your Android phone
Get what ever data plan suits you and they even have a RS100 per month Edge only plan that would give you 100kbps speed all across India but personally I prefer 3g where speeds are more like 4-5mbps where there is 3g coverage and they have listed out areas on their website where they have 3g coverage so you can find out before you buy one of their sim cards.

Sorry about the late reply I just saw GerTourist looking at this thread and I found the information in this thread incomplete.

Need any more info give me a shout
