    Cool Alternative to Wired Broadband

    Hi,

Pissed off with Airtel broadband service, I'm searching for an alternative, Unlocked 3G USB modem being one of favoured options. One of my friends pointed me to one Visiontek 82GH, which costs around Rs. 2000/-. This seems a better alternative to any of 3G dongles from Docomo, Airtel or CDMA ones from Reliance, MTS etc as this gives me flexibility to change at any moment. As wireless is not fully reliable, I can always switch provider on finding problems with connectivity. I mainly need the new device to work with Ubuntu Linux. Also I found quite a few 3G USB modems at digitalgalleryindia.com/universal_3g_usb.php and now I'm unable to decide on one. Also I was wondering if buying 3G device now makes sense as there is some news on 4G. I would want to buy something which will not be outdated very soon, may be at slightly higher price. Suggestions please.

    Regards,

    Hi,

Even if you manage to find a USB like you said, which service providers are you referring to?

I'd suggest that you use a SIM card in your mobile and change service provider as you wish!

    Cheers!

I was referring to any GSM providers like Airtel, Docomo, Idea etc.

I could've used my mobile as a modem, but my handset doesn't support 3G
Another problem is that the network will disconnect if somebody calls to my mobile. And changing service provider on my mobile wouldn't be that easy for I'll either have to wait for MNP or totally go for another SIM which would mean change of phone number. Please let me know if I missed your point.

Rs.2000 seems to be too much for Unlocked USB modem. My friend bought a 7.2mbps unlocked Airtel modem for Rs.1800 with 2 GB data

    Hi maxsteel,

Infact even I heard of Docmo dongle for as less as Rs. 1150/- But spending Rs. 2000 instead of Rs. 1800 or 1150 feels worth when you have the option to switch providers. Imagine cost of buying dongles from 3-4 providers.
