Question Help Advice needed on 3G antennas!

    Hi all,

Would seriously appreciate some advice regarding getting a 3G antenna and / or booster.

I use an Idea Netsetter 7.2 Mbps dongle Huawei E1732.

I generally get a signal strength of about 1 to 2 bars (out of max 5) inside the house where I use it. Most of the time, the connection is an EDGE connection and not a 3G / WCDMA connection.

Obviously, the speed is pathetic around 30 kbps to max 150 kbps or so.

Outside the house, I get a signal strength of around 4 to 5 bars. But the connection is still an EDGE connection. I get WCDMA only ocassionally.

Speeds are still pathetic, more or less the same as what I get inside the house.

About 100 meters away from my home, on the road, I get a 3G signal and somewhat better speeds.

The cell phone tower is about 1 km away from my house. There are lots of trees in between.

    My questions are:

    1) Will it help to install a 3G antenna?

    2) If so, should it be a directional antenna? Which one do you recommend, based on your experience? (I understand there is something called a Yagi antenna which is like the TV antennas of the 1980s, as well as another type of directional antenna which looks like a flat panel.)

    3) In addition to an antenna, will it be necessary for me to install a signal boosting device (an electronic amplifier that magnifies the signals)?

    4) Is there an antenna (or antenna plus booster) that will work well for 3G as well as 4G? I'm asking because once 4G is launched in my city, I want to switch to that.

    5) Can I bypass the need for an antenna if I use MTS Mblaze Ultra, which claims to use frequencies that penetrate better through obstacles?

If you need any other information regarding my particular situation, please let me know.

Many thanks for letting me know of your experiences and advice!

    Regards,
    Sushmita

You are absolutely spot on. Before you spend any money on 3g boosters and what not, I would suggest finding out if there any CDMA service available where you live and see if the signals are good. CDMA waves are better when it comes to penetrating thick walls. Reliance netconnect, MTS, Tata Photon, BSNL EVDO are all CDMA based and if you can borrow a working connection from some one and try it out at your place that would be great. BSNL EVDO is the most economical out of the lot with a Rs750 per month plan for unlimited usage. If you are getting any other connection apart from BSNL then go for a prepaid connection.

I read a thread here about some android app that lets you check which all networks are available at a location and the signal strength.

    Hi Admin,

Thank you very much for your reply and advice.

I will do exactly what you suggest.

Though getting those apps to work will be a challenge on my 3 year old Samsung phone, I guess. Still, I can just buy SIM cards from 1 or 2 providers to check signal strength at my place.

And thanks for pointing out which mobile companies use CDMA.

To anyone else reading this post, here is the thread which talks of the android apps mentioned by Admin:

GSM 3G in India works on 2100 Mhz. CDMA EVDO works on 800 Mhz. rest is pure physics. shorter wavelength have longer penetration power. In CDMA providers MTS uses EVDO Rev.B - 3 carrier, TATA uses EVDO Rev.B - 2 carrier, and the rest are EVDO Rev.A only. So MTS is designed to give maximum speed.

I must add that I have MTS and it works in the deepest corners of my building where no 3G works.
