Default Video calling in popular culture

Now that Mtnl 3g service called Jadoo is launched and will be available throughout Delhi very soon I just thought would compile a bit of background of video calling

A video call is a type of telephone call that is capable of both audio and video duplex transmission. A video call is a different technique it is not as same as video conferencing. This is because the video call is expected to serve individuals, not some groups.

A Video call is a staple in popular culture. In fact it is one of the most famous things in both science fiction shows and movies that usually take place in the future. In such shows or movies a video call is used as a primary and important method of communication. One of the first movies that featured a where a video phone was ‘Metropolis’ made by Fritz Lang.

Some of the famous examples of a video call device is the Picture phone shown in films like, Blade runner, 2001: A Space Odyssey, and Space: 1999. It is also a prominent feature in the British cartoon Danger Mouse, in which the title character is regularly seen communicating with its headquarters via a video call from both his home and his car.

A Video call communication device was featured in the 1944 Warner Bros. cartoon, Plane Daffy. In this cartoon the female spy Hatta Mari used a video call device to communicate with Adolf Hitler. Also the futuristic Hanna Barbera cartoon The Jetsons featured a video call device as a prominent house hold item.

The comic strip character Dick Tracy has a video call device featured since the year, 1964. The detective called it "2-Way Wrist TV", which he used to establish a communication with the police headquarters. The movie Gremlins2: The New Batch also featured a AT&T Video Call 2500 prototype .

CNN was the first network that used a video call phone as a real device for live interviews
