SPYPE would be better option as it required lesser bandwidth.
u need TATA/Reliance connection (144 kbps) on smartphone handset that support third-party software + preferably an unlimited data plan & u need to use ur normal data plan user id & password instead of WAP id & password.
I have tried using skype while travelling using reliance data card but it gives a very annoying lag most of the time... only if you have a very stron signal you can hear and be heard by the other party without any lag.
If you are in areas where 3g is going to be launched soon then go for 3g if its not very urgent right now.
Delhi is going to get mtnl 3g very soon and Mumbai will follow soon and so will the rest of India and using skype on the go will be a very good experiencethere after.
But right now honestly speaking every single mobile internet service sucks.
Thanks a lot panchabhut and Admin for ur replies...
let me make a confession here... i dont qualify much as an educated person when it comes to computer stuff ...so i have been doing a bit of reading/searching rit now....
i am planning on using a G1 phone which has got a built in option for Gtalk and a downloadable version for skype... so then my question narrows down to wht u guys advised ....get a TATA/Reliance connection...
i believe a data card, like wht admin mentioned, is not wht i am looking for using on my mobile... or does it work tht way ?
so how do i go about it ?? wud it be possible for me to use these applications lets say using IDEA unlimited data package for gprs connection @ Rs. 20/Day .. i dont htink i can wait till 3g rolls in Uttarakand...
someone care to brief me a lil...thanks
AMJBL
TATA/Reliance are CDMA based while IDEA is GSM based. Till such time as 3G rolls out in GSM, GSM mobile would not be able to provide adequate bandwidth to support VOIP. However, u can use Gtalk as an IM in text mode.
G1 is GSM based. so TATA/Reliance can not be used with it.
i think u can use Nokia E-series or N-series
u can provided with :
gizmo5 Make free internet calls from your mobile phone a
also i think there is site u can use
geofone.us
Thanks again for the reply....
was just goin thru the specs of the G1 and it says its got WCDMA features... htc.com/www/product/g1/specification.html]
i guess its not the same as the reliance/tata CDMA thingy...
contrary to common perception, WCDMA is not an upgrade of CDMA.
i have a windows enabled phone with winmo6.1,i have sype installed on it.
in areas of a strong wifi connection, calls are very clear and free, most importantly!
but over data connection, the voice drops out every so often..
hmm...like tht ...
yeh guess i have a clearer picture now...thanks all for ur inputs....guess i will have to wait with Admin and others and wait for 3g to roll out....
