    Default World's first modular smartphone

Fairphone the company that introduced the first ethically sourced smartphone in 2013 is now back with the first modular smartphone which is named as Fairphone 2. Google has already been working on a project called "Project Ara Modular Smartphones" for quite sometime now and Fairphone is about to launch its own mobile phone in this category.

The handset is priced at EUR 529.38 (Approx Rs. 38,000) and the shipping will starts from as early as December 2015. As per management the handset is very robust and designed to last. But it is really disappointing that right now the handset is designed to use in Europe only.

That is too much (529€)...Do we really need that kind of phone? The price is very very big! You can but a gaming PC for that money.

While it might be only available in Europe at the moment, I'd imagine that it be rolled out to be available worldwide at a later date.

Manufacturers will usually want to make as much money as they can so limiting it to only certain regions doesn't make financial sense in my opinion.

These look amazing, however, for the price, I'm not sure if I could trust this device, as you also need to purchase all the needed upgrades etc. I haven't heard about this project before, however I have heard about project ara, which actually started off as "block phones" here in the UK as a crowd funded project, which I actually participated in funding!

I'd love to own one of these devices, and the customization options are amazing, similar to building a custom PC, but on a much, much smaller scale!

I am slightly confused. I thought, 'modular concept' gives me the freedom to choose from a variety of hardware, and purchase a phone with features of my preferences. If that be the case, why should Fairphone-2 carry such an exorbitant price tag? Or is it the least expensive model in a range of phones that one could put together? Please correct me if I my understanding is wrong.

Fairphone launched its first ecologically responsible smartphone back in 2013. Built with materials that could be traced to conflict-free mines, by workers in factories where the conditions could be better monitored, and carrying a commitment to reducing the world’s e-waste, it represents a brave step forward in an often uncaring industry. For a small company, Fairphone managed healthy sales — some 60,000 devices — but ultimately, few outside of the long-haired, sandal-wearing community took notice.
