    Default 3g vs HSDPA

    Hi.
I tried mtnl 3g in a sony ericsson (model no. I don't recall) a month and it was showing an 'H' icon in the network area which is presumably short for hsdpa. I tested speed on different sites and downloaded many large and small files; speed was constant 40-45 kBps. I bought a 6630 last week but speed I'm getting is just 15-20 kBps.
So I searched around a bit and found that mtnl offers more speeds in hsdpa models (duh!). But here's the kicker, on their site (replace (.) with . and copy paste mumbai(.)mtnl(.)net(.)in/3gweb/3g_handset.html ) they've mentioned that phones listed only with a * will have hsdpa speeds and I'm sure some of the phones which do have hsdpa (like n95 and n82) do not have a * . Has it got something to do with their wcdma frequencies ? Like the difference between n95 and n95 8gb (both having hsdpa) is that the former has 2100Mhz and latter 850/2100Mhz.

If anyone have a model that supports only 2100Mhz please post your speed. Better yet, if you own any two phones, one being from the MTNL phone list having a * and the other not, please do a comparison in speeds and post.

MTNL 3G operates on 2100 band. whether the handset supports any other 3G band or not is immaterial.
All HSDPA handsets would enjoy higher speeds.

No, HSDPA is better than 3G..

3G can ideally give you a dl speed of 384kbps, whilst HSPDA will provide with whopping 3.6 mbps..

    I want 3.6 Mbps speed...............
But in India , it is not possible at the time......
The only thing is that towers are not embedded with good internet connection as the number of users are increasing.

    MTNL 3G pre-paid.
The default plan is 1p/10 kb. But I normally use the 450 data recharge that gives 1 GB valid for 30 days, no carry over. but last month I went for 1500 data recharge (15 GB valid for 30 days)

    Bravooo!!!
we can hope for a better 2010 and a lot cheaper one...

even if its 1p/10kb, thats cheaper (makes 1 /- for 1 mb)

i use BSNL 3g sometimes, 1paisa.. for making local video calls etc.. but i am not using it generally as for modem..

if prices go down, i will def. move from edge to 3G..

even if they give 500kbps with 3G i will be happy..
i dont browse more than 30 mbs max everyday.. thats all i do...
Site from home gaya bhad mein... AIrtel se bolo FUP band kare.. BSNl se bolo 3G signal do!!!!>: (

HSDPA service is already functional in India. Try MTNL/BSNL.

    Unhappy similar issue

i have two phones: sony ericsson c510 with 2100mhz hsdpa and nokia e71 with 2100mhz hsdpa. Mtnl site shows ** for e71 and for c510 it says no hspa. When i choose hsdpa access ppoint in both phones, connection fails even though sony shows 'H' icon and nokia shows '3.5G'. It means hsdpa is available but not able to connect. When i choose 3g access point in bothe phones it workks but speed is only 380 kbps. Does anybody know why hsdpa is unable to connect?

The hsdpa supports upto 3.6mbps!So obviously it's faster!
But a confusion that everyone missed!
Has/d anyone observed the speed while in data cards given by the mtnl or bsnl and the speed received in mobile phone's difference??

    i have n 79
and i'm getting amazing speed of 40 kBps to 140 kBps its not constant and frequently changes... if your phone have hsdpa it will show 3.5G when it will connect to network which is sign of hsdpa, if its showing only 3G then its only 3G when my plone show 3.5G then it gaves speed between 70 kBps to 140 kBps means its using hsdpa that time.

    my phone support following network
    2G Network GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900
    3G Network HSDPA 900 / 2100
    GPRS Class 11
    EDGE Class 32
    3G HSDPA, 3.6 Mbps
    WLAN Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g, UPnP & DLNA technology

for more you can read my post about my speed and all
