Default MTNL Mumbai 3G Jadoo awesome!

I have recently purchased a unlocked Huawei E173 USB Modem, tested with Airtel 3G then purchased a MTNL Sim and inserted it permanently.

Exceptionally good service I say! speed hover around 2.2-3.2 mbps.
After charging with Rs. 4500 for 6 months unlimited plan through online portal, I downloaded more than 17 GB in two days. I even recorded highest speed of 4.2 mbps(Ya The utorrent speed was showing 500-540 KBps for some time!)

Consider getting a 21.6 mbps dongle so that if MTNL in future upgrade their towers you'd have more speed OR if you decide to go for some other 3G that support 21.6 mbps speed, then your dongle will support it.

I don't know about Delhi but they are fairly easily available in Mumbai. You can buy it on ebay, there are a lot of sellers who have it.

So which company and what model did you chose?

    From the price I think it's a 7.2mbps model?

Wow! Just wow! 3.85 mbps download speed is just great. BUT aren't MTNL towers capable of only a theoretical 3.6 mbps and practically less than that? Or has MTNL upgraded their towers?

cyclopsx23, do you get a consistent above 3.6mbps speed or are they just sporadic bursts? And you are using it in which area?

Yesterday night from 10 pm I got constantly over 3.8 mbps. Even it sometimes goes to 4.2 mbps. normal workin hours time I get 2.8 mbps constant.

Yes, I think MTNL is silently upgrading to 7.2 mbps in some key areas. I live in Andheri East.

This will be a very great step for MTNL. Now that there are players offering 21 mbps speeds MTNL was lagging in the speed race. Now if it upgrades its speed it will be very good.

Consistent >3.8 mbps speeds and touching up to 4.2 mbps is really great. Even at peak times 2.8 mbps is decent enough. I wish MTNL upgrades their towers in Byculla area so that I too can benefit when I get it next month!

If they get a 7.2 mbps tower and there is a 30% slower performance due to congestion and traffic on tower, then too it will be fantastic 5.04 mbps speed!

Wow! Now you have me drooling! You have touched almost 5 mbps there! What is your maximum upload speed?

Can you kindly run a Speed Test here: Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test and post the results? Since you are from Mumbai, use the Mumbai server for testing. When running the test make sure there are no other downloads in progress or website loading or torrents in use otherwise they too will use bandwidth and we will not get proper results.

Now I'm really getting this next month!

No "speedtest.net" this website is not build for 3G. 3G has a problem in this situation, 'slow ping response'. Speedtest counts a small time data transfer in single request system. Thus it will never show the full potential for this connection. I have used BSNL broadband at kolkata since mid 2005. I know how BSNL/MTNL works. When I downloaded via ie, firefox, crome browser's downloader the speed never exceeded 90-125KBps but torrent, flashget, IDM, FDM downloaded continuously over 220KBps. Because they segment the whole file to certain parts send multiple requests through the connection. This is my observation!

Any way, I have a new device in my stable! Last week I purchased a 3G router "Asus WL330N3G". Everyone in this forum have a similar problem with 3G,"frequent disconnection".
The router is the solution. These type of routers continuously check the connection via 'keep alive' system and in case on disconnection it automatically reconnects! So, now I have a super fast connection shared via wifi in my whole room!

    Cyclops !
Are you using "Asus WL330NG" router alone or in conjunction with your E173 dongle? I checked just now in IT bazaar .sounds good.
