i've a friend who lives nearby and with the same plan...but the speed he gets is just amazing.. more than 100kBps....
i chose the mtnl connection only because i thot that i'll get the same speed..but i'm just too sad
You are getting good speeds. 256kbps(kilo bits per seconds)=32kBps(kilo bytes per seconds) You will get speed of 32 in ideal case only if there are no TCP/IP overheads. 28 kbps is norm. Upload speed can be 1/4th of that also as it is asymmetric DSL.

in there u will notice the modem status page when i got the connection 2 months back the the downstream speed was 2048 instead of the current 256.
it lasted for about 20 days, and i was enjoying 220 -230 kbps torrent downloads, during those days and accumalatted about 100GB Data downloads. in those 17 days (connection was down for 2 days.) but after that they did something from Mtnl exchange server to my modem and it started shownig down speeds of 28- 33kbps. i am payin about 1100 rs. pe month for 256 ul. connection and now am averaging 45gb data download per month. if any one can advise me for something cheaper then this the please help me out.
and i download exclusively from free trackers and have at a time around 5 -7 downloads, working with zero seeding. no need to seed . but i have about 300 gb each uploaded on good private trackers. (each) i maintain them for anything not found on free trackers only. and bitcomet is my friend as it also gives me chance to go through its torrent collection which give some very good downloads. of if i need to seed anything its done by good old utorrent.

also i got the first month (abiut 20 days ) free . i was only charge rs. 800 as registration charge in the first month and the connection strted from 5th of the month. my connection details show that the connection was actually charged from 1 st of june instead of 5th of may. that means i either got the registraion + modem free or i got 22 days of free internet. if others have this experiance the please respond. here

256 UL is available for 599 from MTNL. How come they are charging you 1100?

599 is only in New Delhi mtnl. us poor mumbaikars have to shell out through our noses for the net. 999 is the connection costs and ~13% tax comes to 1130

I dont think anyone is still experiencing traffic shaping.
My download speeds are constant at any time of the day according to the plan I am using.
I dont think MTNL, a governament company can do such kind of stuff, but same cannot be said for a private ISP.

For 384kb/s you can set Connections(Global) setting to 250 and Connection(per torrent): to 100. and let there be 5 upload slots. You can also let it auto configure.

Whoever created this thread is an idiot.

I'm using TriBand for like 3 years now.

    I download around 100 GB+ every month.

I have 0 issues in torrents or anything.

Your better off signing up for dedicated torrent sites. Public trackers of torrents the speed will fluctuate constantly that does not mean that MTNL is throttling you or something.

Please do your research carefully instead of posting false information.

kaps4 that's indeed a weird problem you have.

I have no idea. Try another torrent client like BitComet I suppose.

kaps4 do the tests here Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test & Pingtest.net - The Global Broadband Quality Test You getting speeds as per your plan?

Also You have connected the ADSL splitter to your phone line or not?

If you have directly connected the phone line to your DSL modem then that's wrong.

Maybe that's why you get disconnection? Coz if someone calls you you'll be disconnected if it's a direct connection.

It should go through the ADSL splitter.

Oh well good luck all I can say. Hope it gets better for you.

    @kaps4
It will be better if you create a new thread mentioning the problem you are facing.

    Thanks for the reply Sonu...

I do have a splitter. I also did a test on speedtest.net The speed shows fine and as I mentioned earlier, while browsing the speed seems fine its just while I start utorrent it disconnects within 5 mins....anyways trying everything...thnx again

tech123 - It's just that this thread was about torrents and MTNL BB so I thought of asking a Q here. Usually in other forums starting a "new thread everytime is questioned"...but anyways..will start a new thread nxt time cheers

kaps4 - One more solution I'll give you. Disable "DHT" in utorrent. Never use it for any torrent client.

    See if that works?

If it still fails, try another DSL modem....buy one(or try your friends)...everything is pre-configured basically...just enter ur username/pass in it & try that.

That's all I can think off really.

There doesn't seem to be a problem with your computer...it's either the modem or DHT by the looks of it.

One last thing, when you pick your phone up the dial tone comes, is it clean? or there's some "Static noise" disturbance?

If there is some static noise disturbance then check the joints of your phone line...hire a local electrician ask him to re-do the joints & tape them with an electrical tape & get a new phone line jack the one in which you connect the "pin" type wire. They cost like Rs.15. Then try again.

If you still have disturbance, call 1500 & put a complain saying your line is not clear.

If I come up with any more solutions I'll let you know.

    All the best.

Humm I guess there's some truth to this thread after-all.

I did a torrent check last night.

Picked a random torrent with like 40 peers & 12 seeders.

    MTNL started off at 5 KB/s then jumped to 80 KB/s & then was staying on like 15 KB/s - 30 KB/s fluctuating.

Then I tried my Tikona connection with it...to my surprise...Tikona shot straight to 65- 70 KB/s within 1 minute of starting the download!

I'm not trying to make MTNL look down or anything. I Don't work for Tikona...I'm just telling you my test results.

Tikona kept it on 60 - 70 & finished the torrent off in 1 hour. MTNL took 1 and a half hours. Tikona plan is 600 kbps. MTNL is 1 Mbps!

Still I trust MTNL more than Tikona...for now at least.

Tikona has just been don't know what to say...sometimes its good sometimes it bad...make it mostly it's bad!
