Exclamation Top reasons for Torrents Being Slow on MTNL Broadband

What are the reasons mtnl does not allow torrents to work smooth on their triband network.

1) Mtnl is using Traffic shapers
( changing port for the torrent traffic wont help , the traffic shapers can detect the torrent traffic and trap them , regardless to the port they flow on , they are after the protocol not the port )

2) Upload limitation
( mtnl has an upload limitation on their triband line , this for sure doesnt let the torrent share ratio work well for uploads and downloads )

3) Going after the tracker
( mtnl is sniffing destination for most of the trackers and is restricting most of the traffic in conversation with these tracker. )

If one has noticed , whenever u change ur torrent client the speeds are good , but after a while they are dropped significantly because they come under the traffic shapers )

Solutions like packeteer for packet shaping maybe used for restricing such traffic.

Note when we download any file on the P2P network like lime wire we do get very fast speeds - reason to this is the absense of trackers which mtnl may not find for such downloads.

One more reason which has been noticed is the limitation in the number of connections made. MTNL triband on their network have restricted the number of connections limitation on their firewall . This is one reason torrent traffic is dropped very much
or
when torrents are being downloaded surfing is hit and page not displayed or time outs take place.

PLs do comment as i am working on making torrents work on the mtnl triband network.

Thanks

Just to let you know that i download torrents at 200+speeds

I download all aXXo movies and get average speed of 190+

And speed actually remains constant, whatever may be the time of the day.

So i have no problems.

And i have port forwarded my MTNL MT882 modem, that actually helps a lot.

And there is an option of encryption of traffic in utorrent.
Go to utorrent/options/preferences/BitTorrent/protocol encryption and click enabled.

That would be enough.

MTNL traffic shapers wont be able to detect torrent connections.
Hence you get good speeds.

PS- The above idea is solely mine and may not work for you

just wanted to say that there is no such problem of torrent throttling done by mtnl and i have always been getting really good speeds on them, in case you face too many problems, you may like to use the tor (torproject.org)Tor: anonymity online) network

Any official proof?
Or links?

If not then i would assume mtnl does throttle, just to be proactive , you know!

you can use glasnost(broadband.mpi-sws.org/transparency/bttest-mlab.php Test if your ISP is manipulating BitTorrent traffic) to test it, no throttling detected on my side.

i get an average speed of 160 kKBps even the torrent has 4-5 seeds and 70-80 peers..
it takes time to get that speed ,but once dere....its stable
and when seeds are 40-60 i get 200 KBps average...

and yes prtforwarding on the modem helps along with encrypting the torrent traffic.......

i surely would love to do so, but even then you have to pay for the seedbox, and its not cheap. with the weak rupee its a greater burden on our pockets

i agree with u but thn u can dwnld data without the worry of uploading......gives u mentally peace tht even if the power fails the torrents r not disrupted ......most of all all the high lvl trackers cud be maintained easily.....i think the cost factor may be a con but the pros outweigh it....

I donot agree with munishm. I download EVERYTHING at 200 KBps. Use port forwarding in MT882. You should have the small icon at the bottom of BitTorrent turn green. This means your port forwarding is OK. Then you will have 200+ at 256 KBps connection.

Now i have another issue , i hope some one in this thread can take me to the answer,

Q) i have a 512 ul connection. the speeds i was getting was around 220-240 kbps and the usual upload of 25-35 kbps.

Suddenly these speeds have come in the range of 40 - 50 kbps max.

I thought that a 512 was giving me higher speeds of around 2 mbps but sudden this drop or range bound max upto 50 kbps.

Does mtnl give higher speeds to new connections and then reduce.
or
Does mtnl reduce speeds for people who download a lot of data ?

Hoping for an answer

if you're saying that mtnl give full speeds to new connections then you are wrong..
i've just got a new connection few days back - ul 256kbps
but the speed i'm getting is worse... just 25-29kBps.. and upload even low around 19-20kBps
i've a friend who lives nearby and with the same plan...but the speed he gets is just amazing.. more than 100kBps....
i chose the mtnl connection only because i thot that i'll get the same speed..but i'm just too sad

dude, i have the same plan, first few days i got 2mbps but after around 4 days they cut me down to 256 i am thinking of taking the 512k connection now or take another line and use 849nu on one and 749 plan on other for 5GB during the day. 256kbps is just intolerable however it feels much better when you use opera turbo, you should try it out. Also tell your friend not to switch of his modem again if he wants to continually enjoy above 100kbps.

is the speed modem dependent?

no what sachi told is if he disconnects the line and connects again the line speed will be reduced to 256 so as the connection is still active its working over 100 kBps for him..

i'm interested in getting a new broadband connection. I had Airtel till some time back and i never got the promised speeds so am not very interested in it. Could you guys give some more details on how u are getting such high download speeds and which plans u are using. Especially since the person above was downloading a lot of torrents he must be having an unlimited speed connection but that goes upto only 512kbps which would not give 200kbps+ download speeds. Any help would be really appreciated.

PS: Does port-forwarding make so much of a difference ?

Hello Frendz,

I've been using MTNL UL 256 plan from past 7 months, the speed which i'm getting is average speed of 20-25 Kb/s and upload speed of 15-18 kb/s.

I have noticed that whenever i download anything from U torrents at that time most of the sites i visits to gets slow...... or shows error message.

Is there any way i can get rid of this problem............. Also please advise me how can i increase my download speed in U torrents..........

Your suggestions are welcomed............

Thanking you in advance.

Best Regards,

Have you forwarded your ports? Are you on bridged mode or PPPoe mode? What sites do you use for torrenting?

ur speed is pretty much in line with what you can expect from a 256kbps line.... As for some torrents being slow.. Are you sure you are not using torrents which have very less seeds and peers ? Try some very active torrent, any new movie will have atleast a few hundred peers and over 20 seeds. Try to gauge your speed on that.

Public Trackers case are always slow because of unbalanced ratio between seeders & leechers. I download old movies from a site which is private tracker (DHT disabled always in private trackers)and if that movie has like 30 seeders and 8 leechers. I get my bandwidth throttle to maxxxed. Yes, port forwarding helps a lot also make sure you enable Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) on your router for maximum utilization of P2P clients (Emule or uTorrent).
