    hi i am going to buy mtnl broadband 256kbs unlimited download plan...is it that that mtnl provides "256kbs download speed" . normally in other cable net it is that if u take 256kbs plan u get download speed of 32kbs [i.e 256/8].

    256 kbps means 256 kilo bits per second. So it translates to 32 KBps or kilo bytes per second.

    Worldwide, all ISPs mention speed in kilobits or megabits or gigabits. Always divide the speed figure by 8.

    Dont think of speed mentioned in the plan and download speed as separate ones. The speed mentioned in the plan is exactly what you are supposed to get while downloading. Your confusion has been perfectly explained by Just4kix in the previous post.

    1B = 1 Byte = 8 bits

    kbps means kilo bits per second. and most download managers/torrent clients use kBps (kilo bytes per second) as the speed unit.

    So, 32 KBps is exactly what you should be getting when you subscribe to a 256kbps connection irrespective of the ISP.

    Night unlimited plans are most popular among downloaders. These days there is surely a drop in speed as reported in this forum.

    Thumbs up

    1 KBps = 8 kbps i.e. 1 KB/second = 8 kb/second

    So you should get 32 KB/s speed on 256 kbps but you will get 25-28 KB/s speed due to losses caused by length of copper wire from telephone exchange to your house.

    I would suggest to get 849 NU plan because I am getting great speed of 1.72 Mbps i.e over 200 KB/s on the same plan.

    You can download free and unlimited during the night 12 AM to 8 AM.

    I am very happy with 849 NU plan because I can download 4 GB/night :001_tt2:
