Smile NU plans - Upgrading 256 kbps limit to 2 Mbps

    Hie Everyone,

This post is specifically for users who have a chronic 256 kbps cap on their 2 Mbps tariff plans.

What is posted below is not a guideline, but just my personal experience on how i got my speed upgraded to 2 Mbps in less than 10 minutes !

    My problem :
I got my connection activated few days back and could see from my modem's config page that MTNL had kept the speed setting as 256 kbps only, on my DSL 849 NU plan. Complaints to 1500 fell on deaf ears.

    I did the following :

    1) Took a print out of Triband Speed Test from MTNL's website
    httx://202.159.230.232:8888/speed/
("Fortunately", I got only 140 kbps in the speed test).
Also took a print out of Tariff plan and highlighted 2 Mbps in that for my connection.

    2) Went to MTNL office. The jargon which they use for speed is profile.
(I heard this when they were talking amongst themselves)

So, while complaining you need to tell them "Please check my profile on server, and correct it to 2 Mbps as my plan is DSL 849 NU (or whichever plan u use)." I think using the word "profile" made my communication more effective.

Initially they were a bit reluctant and tried to discourage me. Speed test print from MTNL's website convinced them instantly of my poor speed. Then i told them that you are violating TRAI guidelines. Acc. to TRAI I must get a speed of at least 222 kbps (256 less 13%), to which he agreed. Then i bluffed that I have my neighbours who get ~1.8 Mbps dload speeds on NU plans.

Then he said probably your line is bad. So I showed him the DSL Parameter page print which immediately nullified his claim.

Finally, he came to the point and said that he will check the profile on server and revert.

With this, I left the exchange and as I was driving back home, I got more than four calls on my cell / landline that my speed has been upgraded :w00t:

    Conclusion is :
    1) Physically meeting the exchange people is more effective than 100 complaints on telephone / email. (as reported by many others on this forum)
    2) Do your homework - Take relevant prints from speed test and DSL param. to rule out their dumb excuses. Show them that you know the rules.

This is sumthing which worked for me, probably it may help someone in a similar situation.

Good Luck & happy surfing !!!

    hey thanx a lot man...

please explain me wat is DSL parameter u talked about...

i have the speed test printout...but wats param?

    n gr8 article...

i have also given some 50+ calls to deaf ears n thousands of emails

    no REPLY is the REPLY

so i have decided to go to MTNL today..

my plan is 590 NU...it was with 256 Kbps initially but then MTNL announced that all plans upgraded to 2 Mbps and jumped with joys....the joy lasted for a few months though....so i requested them to give me 2 Mbps again as some of my friends are getting that speed...not fair at all

so i was using 256 Kbps till recently to my shock my speed was shown as 115 Kbps....cheating...man i cant take this...

    thanks for the article though

i will post what happens in MTNL though

if any1 wants some numbers of MTNL officers regarding triband then here they are

    Lightbulb Hie Mak

    Dear Mak,

For DSL Parameter page (DLINK 802C) you need to go to -

    Step 1) Config page - 192.168.1.1
Step 2) Go to WAN tab
    3) Click on DSL Param Button, a window will pop up showing different parameters of yr line (in short line quality)
    (see attached screenshot)

I m not sure if you have the same modem, but look out for sumthing similar

for further details regarding the relevance of these parameters, please refer to my thread, where one of our star users - essbebe has replied :

    http://www.indiabroadband.net/mtnl-b...ig-advice.html (DSL NU 849 dl. @ 256 kbps only + DLINK 802C Config advice)

If u r heading for charai exchange, contact me in PM.
