Thread: New MTNL connection queries!

I know there are 1000s of topic like these but still want to be sure about this connection.
I have had very bad experiences of ISPs i had Sify for 2 years long back, i had pacenet, one on one roltanet and reliance broadband+ etc and now i use tikona(FYI it sucks the worst of all the nets i have used till now)

So now I am planning to get MTNL
Because I have heards its really good in speed.
and 2nd because i already own a MTNL landline.
I live in Mumbai(thane).

So my doubts are
1) Torrent problem are they solved or still exists because i download heavily from torrent me gonna get da 512kpbs unlimited

2) Is there any downtime or frequent disconnections issues!?

3) 1 of my friend told me to take a high speed pack like 1mpbs and then switch to 512 kbps because the speed remains high...is this true!?

4)Is MTNL the right choice or TATA or Airtel etc are better

5) Any service Issues...are problem solved sooner or takes time!?

6) Is the download for unlimited packs free day and night or like hathway and sify free for night and charges in the day time!?


It would be helpful if my queries are answered.

I have used Tata Indicom (wired LAN), Hathway and MTNL at Mumbai. Tata Indicom was horrible with very frequent downtime and sometimes extended resolution times. I presently have Hathway and MTNL connections (both 1 mbps, but the MTNL one gets me 1.5 mbps) - absolutely no issues with either.

Were there torrent problems earlier? I have never experienced any problems with my connection (which is about 5 months old now).

2) Is there any downtime or frequent disconnections issues!?

I have experienced only one downtime with MTNL and that was a few weeks back in March between 12:00 AM to 7:00 AM approximately. The MTNL call center guys said it was an outage across their Mumbai operations. I do not think this is a regular occurrence though.

However, AFAIK the modem does disconnect and reconnect every 6 hours. This is not a problem for torrents but if you are downloading something directly from a web server you will probably get timed-out. Using a download manager should solve this issue though (as long as the web server also supports resume of downloads).

Possible, my 1 mbps connection gives me 1.5 mbps, while my dad who has a 512 kbps gets 2 mbps! Both are unlimited accounts.

4)Is MTNL the right choice or TATA or Airtel etc are better

In my experience, TATA is not really up to the mark. Some of my friends have Airtel and they are happy with it. I am happy with both Hathway and MTNL - your mileage may vary of course.

I had to call MTNL only once (that downtime I mentioned earlier) and they were very courteous.

There are several options available, the one I have is Unlimited day / night. Check the MTNL website for the tariff options (unfortunately, I am not allowed to post URLs yet, so no linky-goodness for you!)
