Default Broadband At Two Mbps Speed From 1st January To All Existing Mtnl’s Subscribers

for those who are too lazy to click the link provided by mmm

Shri Dayanidhi Maran, Minister of Communications & Information Technology inaugurated the new building of MTNL “Mahanagar Doorsanchar Bhawan”, here today, in the presence of Dr. Shakeel Ahmad, Minister of State for Communications & Information Technology, Shri Nripendra Misra, Chairman of Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), Shri D.S. Mathur, Secretary, Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and senior officers of DoT, TRAI, BSNL and MTNL. The Minister also inaugurated the new office of TRAI located in the same complex.

The new building of MTNL is fully equipped to cater to the needs of the East Delhi region serving more than 2.2 lakh customers. The building will house futuristic services of the MTNL like convergent billing, 3-G, NGN, IP-MPLS, etc. The convergent billing system will enable the MTNL to provide single bill of all services against multiple bills. In addition it will enable the MTNL to roll out its services faster and in an efficient manner. This will further enable the customers of the MTNL to access through Internet the status of their bills on real-time basis.

Speaking on the sidelines, Shri Maran said that the convergent billing system of MTNL will come into effect from 31st March, next year. He further announced that all the existing broadband customers of MTNL will be automatically upgraded to the speed of upto 2 Mbps from the existing 256 Kbps from 1st January, 2007 at the existing rates.

Keeping in view the year 2007 being declared as “Year of Broadband” in India by the Department of Telecom, the enhancement of broadband speed will further popularise the usage of the broadband in the country. It may be recalled that BSNL has already announced to provide broadband upto 2 Mbps from 1st January, 2007.

This is music to my ears as I am in delhi these days with sify broadband and will surely get a mtnl broadband connection in a week or so

Thanks mmm for bringing in the news

    Default Awesome news !

MTNL /BSNL again rocked . They're going to change the face of internet in India now like they changed the face of mobile telephony by reducing call rates some years ago.

This is a very good news for not just MTNL/BSNL subscribers but for others too because now other ISPs will do the same to stay in business

Hi everyone, I'm on the TriB Cyber A plan right now which is 2mbps for 9999/month and 16GB download limit. Does anyone know what will happen to this plan when 256kbps users are upgraded to 2mbps automatically? Will this (TriB Cyber A) be downgraded to lower rates or something else?

    Awaiting a reply.

    PS: This is GREAT news!

there was an ad in ht today about mtnl increasing the speeds of existing connections to 2 mbps, but according to the ad, its not for unlimited connections.
i m using mtnl, night unlimited(590nu). does anyone know if it applies to this plan??

It would be very disappointing if mtnl only upgraded the speeds. Increasing the download limits and introducing a few more appealing home plans is what they need to do.

common sense says that it should apply to 590NU plans .
if it doesnt then the users should write to the IT minister ...

    mmm,
shall we write an open letter to Mr Dayanidhi Maran here on this forum and request bloggers to link to it so that sooner or later he lands up on that page?

I second that. It's a great idea and may be the only way we can communicate our problems to Mr Maran who imo is the right person to enhance the broadband sector.

    Question

Is anybody even getting close to 2mbps?

The speed test at mtnl's site shows almost 2mbps, but when i download files i get around 300 to 500 kbps... and my original plan was dsl1199 which promised 512 kbps which i never got

Ive tried other speed tests and the highest was 92KBps download and 65KBps upload with the test server being in karachi..

So my question.. is anybody actually getting 2mbps?

    Thumbs down

Telecom minister Dayanidhi Maran announced that mtnl and bsnl's broadband speed will be increased from 256 kbps to 2 mbps at the same price from 1 january 2007. But there is a great comedy in his annoucement as well as disappointment for internet users.Dayanidhi Maran made the people fool. MTNL and BSNL are providing 2 mbps speed only for volume based plans. It is not for unlimited and hourly plans. When a person is paying according to his download limit (i.e. according to per mb), How can he enjoy 2 mbps speed at the same price. He is paying, how much he is using. No one will be benefitted by this promotion of speed.

When telecom minister himself befooling the people, what will be the future of that country in the field of IT? He can make people befool who dont know much about broadband, but an internet user can easily understand his fraud. Mr. Dayanidhi Maran please stop doing such kind of silly announcements before the whole media.
    Shame on you Mr. Maran.

    Unhappy

DSL NU customers must go to consumer court... as mentioned mtnl provides "NIGHT UNLIMITED" not day unlimited, NU users have 1 gb limitation 4 day time usage (implies, this is volume based duruing day time) which implies that they should @least have 2 mbps during day time... Its just so meannn of MTNL...
