Default MTNL 2MBPS Unlimited Good Browsing Bad Download Speeds

    Hi,

I applied for 2MBPS Unlimited connection on 25th May yesterday got a call that my plan has changed and will reflect from the next bill. I check my Router's ADSL page this is the info:
    ADSL Firmware Version : FwVer:3.5.10.0_A_TC3084 HwVer:T14.F7_1.0

    Line State : Showtime

    Modulation: ADSL2 PLUS

    Annex Mode: ANNEX_A

    Downstream Upstream

    SNR Margin: 6.5 21.5 db

    Line Attenuation: 43.0 41.3 db

    Data Rate : 2464 252 kbps

All this seems to be correct but downloading from Rapidshare/Megaupload similar site with a premium account is a huge issue.

Downloading Speed ranges from 7000 B/s to 220 KB/s and this is not a stable speed it keeps fluctuating

before even when downloaded something from Microsoft MSDN i would get a stable download speed of 120 KB/s on 1MBPS plan.

What should i do? Do i complaint now or wait till 1st April and then complain as officially my plan would start then?

    Let me know Thanks!

Your attenuation values are a bit high. Get your line checked by the lineman.

    Refer this

If there is a problem its from their end only. I changed my Internal Wiring 1 months back to CAT-5e cables.

Ask them to check the cable from junction box to your home. How far are you from exchange ?

    Hi Mate

According to me Line Attenuation looks fine and it should not be the problem, can you please check whats MTU on your router and please check download speed on speedtest.net or try to download anything from download.com once.

If nothing helps then you might need to contact your ISP for DSL Status Check/ LTB test.

    Nothing will be done...

MTNL has no speed now...you were better on 1 Mbps plan.

The reason for fluctuation is simple the gateway cannot provide you with constant bandwidth..hence it fluctuates.

Try at 5 am in morning I gurantee you 99% you will get constant speed.

This is just the way it is & forever was with MTNL speed is never constant maybe some days - a couple of weeks after that it's same old!

the Details have changed but the connection fluctuation is still there
    Downstream Upstream

    SNR Margin : 12.1 26.5 db

    Line Attenuation:40.0 33.3 db

    Data Rate : 2464 252 kbps

I know a few things about MTU and I had set it to 1500 (max)

I am not very far away from the exchange I live on MG Road, Goregaon and the exchange is probably around 1km from my house at Malad-Goregaon Junction.
    SpeedTest:
Ping: 60ms which was for some odd reason around 40ms on a 1mbps connection.
    Download Speed: 1.94Mbps
    Upload Speed: 0.20Mbps

aasimenator what is your Gateway number which you connect too??

It starts from 59.x.x.x or 120.x.x.x??

I think all 120.x.x.x. gateways are crap!

    Their 58.x.x.x. gateways are best

I agree with you sonu, my older internet connection has a 58.x.x.x gateway, they don't go down that often as the others
Mine is a new connection so its definately crappy gateway
    Defualt Gateway: 120.60.128.1

I did a quick little test:
This is with the ADSL Splitter for Telephone line + Modem
    SNR Margin : 6.5 22.5 db
    Line Attenuation:42.0 35.3 db
    Data Rate : 2464 252 kbps

This is without the splitter direct from the telephone line
    Downstream Upstream

    SNR Margin : 23.0 15.4 db

    Line Attenuation: 34.0 27.3 db

    Data Rate : 2464 252 kbps

    What do you think?
