Unhappy MTNL broadband connection with wireless modem

    HI All,

I have taken an MTNL broadband connection (combo plan) and since they could not supply a wireless modem, I went ahead and bought an SMC7901WBRA-2 modem-router. Now, come what may, I am just not being able to configure it to connect to MTNL . Even the guys from MTNL have given up since they do not have too much of a clue about modems other than the ones specified by them. Does anyone on this forum use the said modem for connecting to MTNL? If yes, it will be great if you could help me out.

    Thanks in advance!! Cheers!!

    1. Post a screen shot of your modem menu page.

    2. Check with the technicians and find out the VPI/VCI value for MTNL. For BSNL it is 0_35.

Will share a screen shot of the modem home page. Incidentally, the IP of the modem is indicated as 192.168.2.1 (i have tried both with this and by changing it to 192.168.1.1 - but to no avail).

    For MTNL, vpi/vci - 0/32

Do you mean even if you change it to 192.168.1.1, it goes back to 192.168.2.1 ? What is error you are getting while trying to connect ? Try Bridge mode and check.

No. It does not switch back. It stays as 1.1. The laptop also acquires the proper IP - 1.2. I use PPPoE, 0/32, username=<telno>@a, passwd = ca no.

Could you pls share on how to use th bridge mode? Thanks!

    1. How many systems do you use ? 1 laptop and 1 desktop ?

    2. In the TCP/IP properties of the connection in both, set " Obtain IP address automatically ".

    3. Enable DHCP in your modem.

4, Need to see your modem screen shot.

If you are able to find " Internet connection " or " WAN ", create a new connection with VPI/ VCI as 0_32. Browse through the pages and you will get an option to switch between PPPoE or Bridge.

    1. Am trying to configure the modem using a laptop thru RJ45. Once done, I would connect the modem thru RJ45 to the desktop and have 2 laptops in WLAN.
    2. Both are set to auto.
    3. DHCP is enabled in the modem.
    4. I have created a presentation that has a series of screen shots. Which is the best way to share with you?

thanks for all your help, Dilip.

    4. I have created a presentation that has a series of screen shots. Which is the best way to share with you?
    SMC7901WBRA-2 modem-router
    4.
Please delete all tunnel adaptor entries. scrolling the page is tiring . Keep only LAN WLAN entries.
    5.
Also in Network settings LAN and .
    WLAN disable IPV6.
    6.
confirm you don't have any MTNL supplied ADSL modem.

    7.
When you post your reply, click "Go Advanced"
    scroll down the page.
    Select "manage attachments"
    Upload each JPG picture
    or
upload at tinypic.com and give the link/s correctly
without http and www. ( no space or dots)
will be easy to copy/paste in address bar.

My apologies for the long absence - was out of town. Finally, the guys from SMC distributor confirmed that there was an internet connectivity problem with the modem-router. Returned it and bought a Belkin N150...configured it with the same parameters and was on the information highway in a matter of seconds. Thanks, "meetdilip" and "essbebe" for the help extended!!! Appreciate this!!
