Default Thinking of switching to MTNL. Please Help

Hi! I am currently using Hathway but since a few months, they have introduced a fair usage policy which limits the usage of the subscriber and later downgrades it to 256 unless you pay Rs.570 more every month. I have been paying that too looking at the rates of unlimited plans given by Airtel, Tata, Reliance and some others. But this month, their service was terrible! They have no toll free number and I had to spend about 150 rupees in just calling them. So I have now decided to change my ISP. There is an ad about MTNL TriBand in the landline telephone bill every month but I never bothered to read it. I recently searched about MTNL and most other ISPs and after looking at the tariff plans, I think MTNL is the best ISP in India in the aspect of prices. But I have some questions before I choose MTNL.
First, can I get a direct wire which is not connected to my phone in any way?
Second, does MTNL support utorrent? I think it does but does it allow unlimited peer connections? Have you ever felt that it restricts connected peers to a very small number? Or has anyone faced any other problems while downloading from torrents(except unable to load torrent)?
Third, will I have to buy my own modem or will they give it to me or will I have to choose from the models they have(if I have to, how much does it matter)? And how much wil it cost?

    Please help me guys!

The answers to your questions are below:

First, can I get a direct wire which is not connected to my phone in any way?
No there is no direct wire the telephone cable goes to a splitter and then there are 2 separate wires one connects to the modem or router depending on which one you opt for and the other to the telephone cable. The telephone instrument is free from MTNL.

Second, does MTNL support utorrent? I think it does but does it allow unlimited peer connections? Have you ever felt that it restricts connected peers to a very small number? Or has anyone faced any other problems while downloading from torrents(except unable to load torrent)?
Of course it supports torrents and no there is no limit to the number of peers as well as no throttling of speed when using torrents.

Third, will I have to buy my own modem or will they give it to me or will I have to choose from the models they have(if I have to, how much does it matter)? And how much wil it cost?
It is upto you if you want to purchase a modem or you can rent it from mtnl itself. I would suggest that you rent it as the monthly rent for the modem is 50 Rs which is added to the monthly bill or you can opt for wireless router which costs 75 Rs monthly.

Its true that MTNL is the best when it comes to unlimited broadband speed without any hassle of FUP. The service and speed is also good.

Default Thanks a lot 4 replying

BTW I also wanted 2 know that does it restrict some particular websites as i had read in comments of some reviews. Does it block websites partly containing porn etc? And is the phone completely usable when you are using the internet or does the internet disconnect during an incoming or outgoing call??

No MTNL does not block any site and you can use the phone for incoming and outgoing calls when you are connected to the internet.

Hello, Viru what UL plan speed are u interested in?
One thing u have to keep in mind when u go for MTNL is u will get only 80% of plan speed & yes they have specifically mentioned it on their website.
So, for example, if u have 1Mbps UL plan & u get 80% of that i.e. 0.8Mbps & if u complain about it to MTNL they will tell u that they r upto speeds & u will only get 80% of it.
Secondly, the customer care support is not helpful to say the least & u will get a lot of Marathi one-liners.Your only option would be to register a complaint by dialing 198.
Thirdly, if the SNR & attenuation values r not within range (meaning if u dont get proper signal via tele line) your internet & tele line will both be affected.
Lastly,u need to have a tele line before u can get an MTNL net connection but u already knew that. There used to be a activation charge + modem charge =Rs. 600 total
(Rs 900 if wireless) but i think they have waived that recently.

Thank you so much for helping me fardeen and jamie! I was wishing for 512 but the 752 plan looked better at plus 150 rupees so i decided to go for that. thanks 4 letting me know in advance about the 80 percent speed or i would have been calling them. so afterall i am going to get the bandwidth of 512 only which is 60. i hope its more because i download 24/7. but as per the rental, its fine. and if they make up for it by giving about even 1-1.5 MBps speed on sundays for full 24 hours, it would be fantastic. i know that the call centres of all government offices suck with no exceptions and those unnecessary marathi comments and mixed language are just annoying. thir upto speed saga of isps is also so stupid and non professional. thanks for the snr info too. i will check my internet including torrents and my telephone line both befordd i let them leave. i booked my connection today evening with my current number. there isnt any activation charge probably and i guess i will rent the modem from them as they said that hathway modem will not work with mtnl but i will still ask about it. they also only said that all charges will be included in the bill. i am waiting 4 the installation people to come only then will i know. my old isp has already disabled its service. i have been using my mobile phone since morning and this post has taken half hour to type.

The line from MTNL goes through a splitter before being connected to the modem and handset. The main line connects to the splitter via an RJ45 (telephone) jack. If you absolutely don't want to use the phone, you can remove the splitter and connect it directly to your modem. It is up to you.

You can get a modem on rent, for which you will have to pay an upfront amount and a monthly rental.

I got it all set up. The main wire was attached inside a tiny rectangular box first. Then a cable was connected to the other end of box and the other end of that cable to the splitter. One cable from the splitter was connected to the modem and the other to the telephone. The engineer said that the telephone could also be connected directly where the main wire came from but then when the internet would be used, you could not hear any sound on the phone and for using the phone, you will have to stop using the internet first. So it is best to have a cordless phone imo.
For the modem, I probably didnt have to pay any upfront amount or deposit, no deposit of anything in fact (they have my landline's deposit already btw). The engineer said that there is no modem rental for unlimited subscribers. But I will only know when this month's bill arrives!

The diagram is wrong. Line and Phone slots of the splitter in the diagram are interchanged. The telephone line wire goes where the phone jack is wrt the diagram and then the phone and modem wires should be connected as specified on the splitter. And btw the phone can only be used at the same time and with no disturbances if a splitter is used.

ITs not wrong . Different companies have different splitter arrangement. The one showed here is of Beetel . I was also confused before!

Okay whatever! I only said about the cordless phone for those who dont have their pc and their phone in the same spot and don't want to do wiring just for the phone. So, you aren't an expert either so shut up!

    @Viru
So, you aren't an expert either so shut up!
You have lost the argument/discussion, by your intemperate comments.
You cannot ask me/ not to post in any forum/ thread ,
and as you are new comer to this forum,
    i am ignoring your comments.

For your kind information, i have one telephone in one room. a cordless in the Drawing room/ A voip phone( cordless) and another landline also. along with laptop in my room.
Just to know what you "think" and don't post here , I said
" I am using an ordinary phone "!!

A little knowledge is a dangerous thing.
    Develop scientific temper.

    @karanits
You re right. The "Funjin" I got from Airtel 3 to 4 years back.
Even if the connections are made wrongly, we can correct by
the result/s in BB and telephone.

I was never arguing with anyone. You are the one who started it. I just thought it was wrong and you could've just told me that there are other combinations with different modems but you just wanted to write a derogatory thing coz you are an old member. I don't give a damn how many phones whatever kind you have or how many cellphones you carry with multiple sims. And you dont need to tell me to develop a scientific temper coz I guess you are the one in need of it. Maybe being a full timer on the internet has taken a toll on you and that's a very dangerous thing indeed!

Default Re: Small Home business MTNL broadband

I am starting a new home office for my consultancy and have applied for an MTNL line and then plan to take on MTNL broadband. Can anyone suggest what phone instrument I should get that I can expand on a PBX system later or use as a VOIP phone? I plan to use the phone for voicemail messages and also as an IP phone.
    Thanks
