Default Thinking about getting MTNL have some questions

    1. How's the speed on torrent? I've heard you need to port forward the router, Is that a big issue?

    2. Are there any torrent sites blocked, like private torrent sites and others?

    3. After how much time does it auto disconnect? Does it cause any problems in torrents?

    4. Can I use the mtnl wifi router to connect on my wifi enabled phone? can I use laptop and phone at the same time?

    5. If I get the 512 k plan which costs 600rs what will the total monthly charge be considering that the wifi router has a 75 rs monthly rent, so the total charge should be 675 right? or are there any other taxes or charges included?

Thanks. Help will be really appreciated

The speeds on torrents are great at first but after a few minutes, because mtnl is using traffic shapers, it dips and rises too much and it completely stops downloading after sometime and reconnects itself after a while. So overall, you will only be downloading half of what you should be.

There are not any torrent sites blocked by mtnl but some sites dont open or are blocked by mtnl. I was searching something few days back on google and the fourth search result said server not found when i opened it. That is impossible. So maybe some sites dont open on mtnl or they are blocked.

Private trackers need registration to their respective sites for you to use them.

Yes it does autodisconnect! And it is disgusting! I haven't seen it disconnect even once when surfing but when downloading from torrents, it often disconnects all peers from torrents and sometimes the whole connection goes out and you have to restart the modem. So, it is causing major problems when downloading from torrents.

Yes you can use as many devices as you want with Wi-fi but do remember to keep a Wi-fi password as per the government guidelines.

I dont know about extra taxes. But i know that there is no rental of modem if you are on an unlimited plan. I am using a wired modem btw but it is the same for both I think.

The 752kBps plan for 750 is better than 512plan so go for that one I would suggest. If you download too much and have a lot of pending files, dont opt for mtnl though its cheap, because the service is like there is no service at all and the rainy season is also coming when if your phone is out, your net will be out too.

I live in mumbai btw so recheck the info where you live.

How did u find out that MTNL is using traffic shapers?
I am also getting reduced speeds & I am not even using torrents.
MTNL is traffic shaping, but how can I prove it?
How did u check for traffic shaping or is MTNL capping bandwith after 1GB?
By the way, AFAIK MTNL connection resets after 6hrs.

@viru thanks for the reply. So the connection disconnects and doesn't re-connect automatically? and the traffic sharper caps the downloading? humm. . this is kinda serious issue since I'm always downloading stuff 24/7. I'm currently using sify, it has no such problems except for the the highest speed available is only 384kbps, so I was thinking of switching to mtnl since it offers higher speeds and will make my downloading easier. I live in delhi btw. Can anyone confirm these issuse from delhi?

    @mickey thanks!

@jamie You just know when they use traffic shapers because before that, your downloads(from torrents) would go smooth throughout but now, there will be a lot of swings in speeds. And the traffic shapers are also affecting video streams from all sites.
What do you mean by reduced speeds? People were getting 200-300 bandwidth 24/7 everywhere but since a month or two, mtnl has stopped that and now subscribers only receive speeds as per plan. And it has also stopped the 2mbps speed it used to give on sundays which they probably still say on their site. I don't know how to prove that they are using traffic shapers but there are some sites that can tell if your ISP is using them or not. I took that test some days ago but it was 8minutes long and before it could finish, my internet went out and i didn't try again. I dont remember the site but google it you will find it.

@Havoc666 It keeps disconnecting and reconnecting automatically. I switched to mtnl for the same reason of higher speeds in torrents but am disappointed. I would recommend you to stay with Sify because with mtnl you cannot even pause torrents for a little longer or your whole connection gets reset and it takes a lot of time for the modem to restart and become fully functional.

Mtnl is even blocking normal traffic from file hosts and other downloading servers. Downloads in general. I was not able to complete downloading a 100mb file though I was using the internet for no other purpose. It has happened twice. This is unacceptable. Mtnl is showing its true colours of known poor government service.

Don't buy MTNL they would limit the downloads after sometime like in 1 or 2 months. Go for BSNL or Airtel.

i am using mtnl 512kbitps unlimited plan in nangloi, delhi and got almost constant downloading speed of 64 kbps both on download manager and torrent.no torrrent blocking ...and no speed issue .however it auto disconnect once or twos in one month but automatically connect in 1 or two hours.sometimes it gives me speed bump of 2 mbps
highly satisfied with mtnl as compared to any other.
also switched to 2mbps plan ul plan and got constant speed .
    these issues are not everywhere,
