Unhappy iPhone 3GS connection problems with 450TC1 WiFi modem/router

I don't know if this query has been posted before. Please guide me if it all this has been answered previously.

I recently bought an MTNL Triband connection and chose to have a Beetel 450TC1 WiFi modem. Everything connects smoothly (I work on a Mac OS X) and without any glitches. I also get a good speed consistently.

However my iPhone 3GS loses connection mid-way with the WiFi modem. I either have to turn off/on the WiFi settings inside iPhone Preferences or turn the modem off/on to retrieve the connection. This has become a nagging problem for me while surfing from home. I decided to call up technical support at MTNL but they could not provide me with the help I wanted. The result is that the problem is still persisting.

Could anyone tell me what is going wrong & how do I set this thing up. I'd be glad to provide further information on the subject if it helps. Thanks in advance.

What is the signal strength ? Try using the phone close to the modem and check.

Is it only with your phone ? WiFi working fine in laptop ?

Are you able to see other networks (not yours) in the WiFi connections list ? Check the channel used in the wireless page. Change it to say 9 or 11 and check.

Thanks for your prompt reply MeetDilip.

    1. I have a Windows XP laptop and a Mac OS X notebook - both work perfectly well at any distance that I choose. It's only the iPhone that doesn't connect well and consistently.
    2. I have used the iPhone from a very close distance to the WiFi modem, and although the signal strength is excellent (based upon my understanding of the WiFi graphics), nothing seems to work.
    3. Yes, I am able to see a Tikona connection in my wireless list. The only one available in my locality.
    4. I will change the wireless channel from 9 to 11 and check.

Thanks for your suggestions once again. I will revert with my reply tonight/tomorrow.

I tried a few things to get the connection consistent but nothing seems to work:

I reset the iPhone network settings (General > Settings > Reset > Reset Network Settings).

I also changed the channel from AUTO to 9 and 11 respectively. I get connected for a few minutes and then nothing. (Thanks to MeetDilip for helping)

Need some more ideas from the experts. Please help.

If on warranty take it to authorised store.

    1) Turn off the auto-brightness. (Saves battery draw.)

    2) Turn off Bluetooth when not in use. (Saves battery draw.)

    3. Use without any security key in wifi router.

    source : Google search.

Hi Essbebe, thanks for your response.

My iPhone is not under warranty now. Secondly my Bluetooth is always turned off when not in use and I will turn off the auto-brightness.

However I did not get the 3rd point. Do you mean that I should remove the security password used to authenticate my session, from the WiFi router? Please guide.

Please post the correct model number of your iphone.
As i don't have one, I search for answers in iPhone forums.

However my iPhone 3GS loses connection mid-way with the WiFi modem
Usually WIFI router will have a stable frequency.
The 3G Iphone battery drain is also heavy in wifi mode, and possibility of freq drift possible. ( only guess work ).the wifi chip in the phone is
    also blamed.
How many years the batttery is in use ?

you need not use unsecured connection Since there is no problem in getting connected with whatever security key you have used.

Default iPhone 3GS Model MC133ZP wifi intermittent.

It appears, problems like this are solved in seconds in APPLE stores ! When different models specially meant for a particular country/zone is/are used elsewhere.

Can you connect to any 3G wifi network ONLY with the phone ?
and the Internet is connected to the laptop ?
    ( reverse mode !)

Presume all other iPhone functions are ok.
Mention OS used : Windows 7/Vista/XPSp2 etc.
    Please give feeedback

I don't have any means to connect to a 3G wifi network right away. But I can surf without any issues from my Macbook Pro - I use a Mac OS X Snow Leopard.

I could connect to the Belkin cable modem earlier without any glitches. Don't know how the cable modem has changed the settings.

Thanks for sharing the screenshot. The settings are almost same. But the Encryption for 'WPA-PSK' for me is 'TKIP/AES'. Does that say anything to you? Let me know.

could be the problem. Try different security keys. of WPA.
If still NO GO try WEP.
confirm MAC address filter is deactivated.
    2.
    from Google search:
Check the wireless security option of your Wi-Fi router:

If you are using WEP security and have multiple WEP keys on your Wi-Fi router, try configuring your Wi-Fi router to use only a single WEP key in key index 1.
Consider using WPA or WPA2 instead. WPA and WPA2 encryption protocols are newer, more effective security options for wireless networks than the older WEP protocol.

Temporarily disable wireless encryption or security on the Wi-Fi router to rule out encryption issues.
Disable 40MHz in the 2.4GHz settings on the Wi-Fi router. Mac computers, iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch do not support this mode. Disabling it may reduce interference issues.
