    Default Linksys WRT54G + UT-300R2U - Configuration MTNL

    Hi all,

I have an MTNL connection at home through a UT-300R2U ADSL router. I also have a Linksys WRT54G wireless router. Can I share my internet connection wireless/wired through the Linksys router to my 2 PCs and 1 laptop?

Can anyone help me with the settings? I can post the screen shots of my current settings on MTNL and the pages of the wireless router setup screens.

    Please help.

    Thanks,

    Sooraj.

    @sooraj,
You can connect your Linksys WRT54G wireless router to UT-300R2U to create a wireless network at your home. Please note that you must connect the LAN port of UT-300R2U to one of the LAN ports of WRT54G. Connecting to the internet port of WRT54G may or may not work. It does not for me.

Also note that DHCP cannot be ON on both routers (UT-300R2U is a modem+router).

    You have two options:

    1. UT-300R2U as the main router and WRT54G as a Wireless Access Point
    a) Connect your PC/Laptop to UT-300R2U using the USB port. Configure your UT-300R2U as usual using a wired connection (http://192.168.1.2)
    b) Use PPPoE as your connection method; enter your BSNL username/password
    c) DHCP should be ON
    d) Ensure that you can connect to the internet.
    e) Connect the UT-300R2U to WRT54G using an ethernet cable (LAN Port of UT-300R2U ---> Lan Port 1 of WRT54G)
    f) Connect a PC/Laptop to Lan Port 2 of WRT54G using another ethernet cable.
    g) Configure the WRT54G from the configuration page (http://192.168.1.1)
    h) Use PPPoE as your connection method; enter your BSNL username/password in the fields
    i) Enable WEP or WAP security; note down the key value
    j) Finally turn DHCP = off in your WRT54G setup. Note that you will not be able to access the WRT54G setup page once you turn DHCP=off. Hence this should be done last.

    2. UT-300R2U as bridge and WRT54G as a Wireless Router
    a) Configure your UT-300R2U router in bridge mode with DHCP = off. The manual on the CD should tell you how.
    b) Configure the WRT54G as above leave DHCP = on

Option 1 is suggested when at least one PC/Laptop is connected to UT-300R2U via USB and others connect to internet via WRT54G.

Option 2 is suggested when all PCs/Laptops connect to internet in wireless mode.

Always turn wireless security on (WEP or WPA).

    Hi Sooraj1808,
I wanted to know if you were successful in configuring your Linksys router. If so, plesae post the configuration settings on the forum as well.

Cool Unable to go online with Linksys router's

Hi, if you are using MTNL or BSNL any connection and if that modem is already working like a modem/router than there's no much to do with linksys router,
Connect the modem to the router's internet port and computer's to any of the 4 ports of the router then try these steps:
    1. Open the router setup page and go to Status of the router and check if you are getting modem ip in internet section then go to setup page again and changed the LAN ip of the router to any other subnet or other private class of ip i.e. if modem is giving 192.168.1.1 ip then changed the router's LAN ip to 192.168.5.1 and save the settings.
    2. After changing the setting do release and renew to get the new ip from the router..i.e. you will start getting 192.168.5.100 ip in system.
    3. Now open the router setup page with 192.168.5.1 (it's a Default Gateway IP) and go to security tab and uncheck block Internet request and save it.
    4. Now do a proper power cycling.. power off modem, router-- wait 20 secs then power on modem first wait for the lights to get stable then turn on router.
And now try to go online.

MTNL and BSNL users do not know anything beyond their own modems and stuff. This is pathetic but there is no point in saying that they are useless, worthless, etc. Consider this:
    • These CC people are basically people who may not have engineering degrees. They are not the best talent available.
    • They are recruited and trained to handle their (MTNL/BSNL) own CPE and stuff. The CC works like a typical call center.
    • These jobs are actually outsourced to some small company. The job does not pay well.
    • MTNL/BSNL have the right to refuse help in setting up modems/routers sold by other companies. This is quite fair. If you were in USA, will a Netgear CC support guy help you with a problem with a Linksys router?
    • Why would a smart engineer work for BSNL/MTNL (or for that matter even for Airtel, Reliance, etc.) in the customer care department, even if it was not outsourced?
So that is where self-help and forums like ours come into the picture.
