open command prompt

ping microsoft.com or download.com

get the public ip address of microsoft.com which is 207.46.197.32

now go to IE and then type "http://207.46.197.32"

see if it opens microsoft.com

dude it only happens when ur net is not connected..u call mtnl helpdesk and ask them they will sort out ur problem and u can also ask them how to ping ur connection..they will give an ip address u just have to write it in run
i am also using MTNL-DELHI and when i have this problem i simply check my ping
ping 192.168.1.1 -t
"ping 203.94.243.70 -t"- when i face this problem i usually ping this ip and i get some replies like destination net unreachable or request time out...
so 1stof all to prevent this problem u 1t use something to make gap between ur modem and table so that when u use ur modem the heat should pass easily from the bottom or else ur modem will hang..and secondly if u have request time out then try restarting ur modem after 2-3 minutes time taken after switching it off and in case of destination net unreachable ur ISP is giving the problem to contact helpdesk

Default Change your MTU settings in router configuration.

I changed mine from 1500 to 1492 and it works fine
