Default Any tweaks/suggestions for saving download MBs

Are there any tweaks/suggestions that you use for saving on download MBs
E.g.. making the Firefox cache 'read-only' or other such tweaks that you know of.
I have the 500MB (combo) plan
    Thanks in advance.

You can turn off the videos and animations to get downloaded. this option is available in internet explorer. Try to uninstall flash from your system, as flash is said to be the major culprit in huge downloads in browsing pages alone.

uninstalling flash might not be very feasible with just sheer content available in it. But there is another way. Here is a link to firefox addin which basically blocks flash script unless you choose to download/open it. its good. here the link,
    mozdev.org - flashblock: index

Another one may be to continuously track your usage. Some very smart guy has built an add on for firefox for bsnl/mtnl which shows your usage till date.
DataFox - A BSNL DataOne & MTNL TriBand bandwidth usage monitor
