Nobody is dead here ... but this question has been asked so many times that everyone is tired of answering anymore. You could have done a forum search on this issue.

    Anyway ...

    a) Internet speed is always denoted in kilobits per second abbreviated as kbps.
    b) When downloading something from the net (even a webpage), the speed in the browser is displayed in computer terminology or kilobytes per second. This is abbreviated as KBps or KB/s.
    c) 8 bits = 1 byte and hence if the ISP max speed is 256 kbps, the max download speed achievable is 32 KB/s.
    d) However, download speed also depends upon external factors such as network congestion, load on the source server, time of the day, etc.

Before you cry foul on ISP speeds denotions, let me tell you that this is true worldwide and it is not something that Indian ISP's are doing.

And you could do a speed measurement on reputed sites such as Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test but even those are not always accurate.

The speed of 40-50 kbps is good...but when you check the speed of your broadband connection using MTNL BB Speed Testing site...it astonishingly gave me results of 1.4-1.7 MBPS last night......

I have been using the same plan for a long time now. Unfortunately this plan will give you only 25-30 Kbps download using torrents.

It does jump up when downloading from other sites using download manager. I have run the speed tests and they have been mostly incorrect.

I believe that the speed is capped for the unlimited plan users. Earlier when I was using the limited download plan I was getting much better speed.

Anyway, I am switching to WiMax by end of this year, cant take this shitty speed anymore.

Using TriB_Unltd_256kbps "wired" since july. Ever since i switch to "wireless" - Trendchip HG520 {same plan} TriB speed is giving me nightmares. I agree to "vbagri007" that from the past 10 days ..i am ALSO not getting speed even of 10 kbps ..Though the browsing speed is fast BUT all downloads from rapidshare links are pathetic since last 10 days.
In the past (prior to wireless) i was getting 50 KBPS (thats kilobytes)

    Thumbs down Problems

    Hi Guys,
I am using mtnl UL 256 plan for past 2 months. For a month all went well, good speed, torrent@200+ KB/s, normal download@100+ KB/s, but around 15 days back frequent disconnections started, but speeds remained as such.

2 days back my net got disconnected and would not connect, next day after repeated calls to cust. care finally my net started working again. The solution, they told me to change the password in the internet settings to default paassword that is CA No. in the modem(Trendchip HG520) and it worked but i have changed the password on MTNL site and with that password in the modem net doesn't work(Earlier it was working).

Now, the torrent speeds are same but normal downloading is pathetic, giving speeds of about 10 KB/s on all types of downloads. The browsing speed is also bad now.

Earlier Streaming speed was very good. Youtube would run without stooping, but now it takes hours to play a videos. Same is the case with news site which offer Live TV.

Tried Open DNS, but to no avail.

Have complained to MTNL people but i dont think they will have a clue.

Guys what do u think? where is the problem?

    Your views are needed urgently.
