Default HELP!! Trouble in installing WiFi router

    Hello everyone!!

i am in delhi using the MTNL service. i have a MT882 wired modem installed. However i have just bought a D-Link DIR-300 router. I am have tonnes of troubles in installing the router in the first place. The router just does not connect to the internet service. It asks for a static IP address or Username and password. I have entered the username and password which the telephone number and the customer ID, but still it does not connect. Can someone please tell me how get through this!!

    Questions
    1. What the internal IP address of the MT882 router? Is it 192.168.1.1? If yes, your d-link router must not have an IP address in the range 192.168.1.*.

    2. How did you normally connect to internet (using MT882 and before buying the D-link router)? By a dialer from PC or were you automatically connected to internet as soon as powered on?

IP address conflict is the most common factor why two routers don't work in the same network. Even though this is the most common issue, it is the most overlooked factor and quite possibly because people do not understand IP addresses and are afraid to change settings that are unknown.

The guides that come with the router always assume that their modem/router will always be the only such device in the network and hence do not bother about mentioning this fact.

I am glad that your problem is sorted out. If you are new to networking, please go through some of the basics of networking from PortForward.com - Free Help Setting up Your Router or Firewall or Wikipedia. I have also extracted lot of information from the two sites and created some guides:

justfix is doing great job in documentation, admin should consider creating a briefcase to organize and keep safe of all these docs. It should be kept in a easy and quite reachable way to users.
even i too came to know of these docs, only after visitng this thread though i have been here for the past 1 month.
