    Post US Presidential Elections 2008

Well as the US presidential election draws to a close and the last votes are coming in its time to ponder on what effect ths is going to have on the global economy ...... Barack Obama is set to win this election as McCain seems to be trailing

At the time of making this thread
    Obama-207
    MaCain-114

Well i have always been a democrat . So naturally i support Obama . Obama is also one of the most Charismatic leader/politician i have ever come across .There is aura of honesty and sincerity about him. Even the Europeans seem to be in love with him . He is young and is full of energy .And is exactly what America wants "The Change" .
I agree with most of Obama's policies
His Education policy - Excellent !..... Convert the test based assessment[of academics] to something more dynamic
Energy Policy - Very Good ..... Reduce the green house gases output of U.S by upto 80 %
Ethics Policy - Very good ......Abolish the state secrecy Privilege
Immigration Policy - Hmmm ....ok ...Still he may put a cap on legal migrants
Foreign Policy - Excellent ! ... Diplomacy first

So these r the reason i support Barack Obama

And I also thought that MaCain's Choice of Running Mate [Palin] was pretty Pathetic

So whom do you support ?

And I also thought that MaCain's Choice of Running Mate [Palin] was pretty Pathetic
Obama in his acceptance speech following his nomination as Democratic candidate for US presidential post said that he, unlike the Republican candidate John McCain, “will stop giving tax breaks to corporations that ship our jobs overseas, and I will start giving them to companies that create good jobs right here in America.”
if obama actually does it then it will adversely affect the flow of work to INDIAN IT and BPO firms.Though Indian firms r trying to move towards EUROPE, still 60% of their revenue comes from US. so we do have reasons to worry.

but then again, such decisions r determined by economic considerations of the biggest firms. but to stay competitive, outsourcing is the best way. and i m going over their having not enough talent at home. outsourcing has boosted US economy over the years.
so i believe, it is was a stunt the politicians play to gain support by making people believe they r actually going to cater more jobs for HOMEYS.

except that statement, i liked all his moves.

and about SARAH PALIN, i have seen wiser politicians in india. Well, that was too harsh a statement, i hope she doesnt sue me.

just watch this utube vid.............YouTube - CNN Laughs It Up Over Sarah Palin Interview

Default US polls: How US presidential elections works

US polls: How US presidential elections works

To understand how US presidential elections work, think of the 50 American states the same way as you would 50 Indian states with one important
difference. If a candidate wins the popular vote in one state, he gets all its allotted "Electoral votes." The number of electoral votes in each state is its number of Congressmen or Representatives (variable depending on population) plus the number of Senators (always two per state). There are a total of 538 electoral votes and the winning candidates needs at least 270.

The biggest prize is California, which has 55 electoral votes, and this is already in Obama's bag (according to polls) as is New York (31 votes). That's like an Indian candidate or party winning all seats (or electoral votes) in UP and Maharashtra. For good measure,Obama also has his home state
Illinois (21), Michigan (17), New Jersey (15), Massachusetts (12), Washington (11) Maryland (10) with him. A host of small states like Connecticut (7), Oregon (7), Rhode Island and Hawaii (4 each) Vermont, Delaware, and District of Columbia (3 each) bring his assured tally to 203.

For McCain, the biggest assured prize is Texas with 34 electoral votes. His home state of Arizona (10), Tennessee (11), Alabama (9), Kentucky and South Carolina (8 each), Oklahoma (7), Mississippi and Kansas (6 each), Nebraska and Utah (5 each), Idaho (4), Wyoming, South Dakota, and
Alaska (3 each) bring his assured total to 122.

Then there are states that are leaning towards Obama or trending towards McCain. The Obama leaning states are far more in number and weightier electorally. They include Pennsylvania (21), Virginia (13), Minnesota and Wisconsin (10 each), Colorado (9), Iowa (7), New Mexico and Nevada (5 each), Maine and New Hampshire (4 each). Winning all these states where he is ahead in the polls will put Obama at 291.

He can even afford to lose Pennsylvania or a couple of smaller states and still reach the magic number of 270. He has that luxury, which is why McCain is doing his level best to win Pennsylvania, even though he is 8-10 points behind in the polls.

For his part, even if McCain wins all the states leaning towards him (Georgia – 15, Louisiana – 9, Arkansas 6, West Virginia 5, Montana and North Dakota 3 each), he would have only reached 163. He not only has to grab Pennsylvania from Obama's grasp, but also take home five golden "battleground" or "toss-up" states which we have not even discussed and where polls show they are running even.

These states are Florida (27), Ohio (20), North Carolina (15), Indiana and Missouri (11 each) which have 84 electoral votes between them. So for McCain to make it to the White House, he has to win all the states leaning towards him (besides those he is already assured of), plus all the battleground states, plus Pennsylvania and/or a few states trending towards Obama. The arithmetic looks difficult for him, which is why pundits are forecasting an Obama victory. Obama has many more roads and options to victory. McCain has fewer.

If Obama sweeps the board, winning all states trending towards him and the battleground states, he will have a landslide and end up with 350-plus electoral votes. McCain's best case scenario will barely get him past 270.

Obama has been elected as the 44th US President

Obama will face the immediate challenges of overcoming an economic crisis and ending the war in Iraq.

How many of us think, Obama win will not effect outsourcing in india and he had mentioned before that he gonna imply taxes on those american companies who are indulge in outsourcing?

This is a para from McCain's speech:

I urge all Americans ... I urge all Americans who supported me to join me in not just congratulating him, but offering our next president our good will and earnest effort to find ways to come together to find the necessary compromises to bridge our differences and help restore our prosperity, defend our security in a dangerous world, and leave our children and grandchildren a stronger, better country than we inherited.

Whatever our differences, we are fellow Americans. And please believe me when I say no association has ever meant more to me than that.

It is natural. It's natural, tonight, to feel some disappointment. But tomorrow, we must move beyond it and work together to get our country moving again.

We fought, we fought as hard as we could. And though we feel short, the failure is mine, not yours.

Can we ever see this happen in India?

The effect of U.S election on Indian economy and standing is very real....Like Evander said "we do have reasons to worry".

As i said before i spent some of my schooling years in the U.S and am now looking for a chance to go back .... So emigration policy will have a direct effect on me ! Its in a shitty state as of now .... as even legal migrants are being questioned and harassed .... There is much talk that all this will change for the good when Obama comes to power .

And any way IT sector guys might just end up loosing their jobs ! if Obama implements that scheme !

But i ll still support Obama 'cause i think he will reconsider his decision on that one issue that i dont agree with

Its spelt Homies I think

People in kenya have gone mad [For a good reason His father is from Kenya ]

Many Indians it seems were also campaigning for Obama !... thru Telephones .... and they r celebrating
Indonesia where he lived a little while when he was a kid has also erupted in celebrations .

Even Russia and Iran have given positive comments Regarding Obama ...... Russian Premier even going as far as saying that Russia was not Anti-American  .....

Hopefully he will fulfill his promises on policies he made during campaigning ... Well a guy from nowhere bursts into the spotlight competing and defeating the Likes of Clinton and MaCain to become the First Black President and one of the youngest ...... Well its one event nobody is going to forget soon !

And Obama mixing with Ku Klux Klan

    That would be impossible

Read up on Obama's story [background]...... very interesting .....

He has in the past turned down many powerful positions ... and theres a auro of honesty about him .... he really believe in what he does ...

He was also a Senior Lecturer in a law college ....

    Here s an excerpt
    Quote
The young Professor stood apart in many ways than one .Other Faculties dreamed of tenured positions ,he turned them down . At formal institutions Obama was a loose presence , joking with students about their romantic prospects , using first names , referring to case law one moment and "The Godfather " the next .

Manish I dont think you understand American Politics man ......

U.S Does nt want to invade India .... It wants India as an ally against China ....

Are you seriously telling me that US wants Kashmir for its own ... ?

Or wants to give it to Pak?

By the way U.S Has a way stronger army than India ......I have been keenly following both their Military expenditures ....
Even China can defeat India if there was an Indo-China war ...

Why do i say that ? ....... India has one of the largest infantry army ..... unfortunately thats not very useful ......
The strength of any modern army lies in its air force/navy ....... Most Of Indian aircrafts as you know are outdated , India has only one aircraft carrier [very old again] ,
India does not have any nuclear submarines,Ships [which uses nuclear fuel, not weapons].
U.S is spending huge amount of Money Mechanizing their army .... a few years from now .. U.S army will consist of Humans as well Artificial Intelligence Robots!
Same can be said about China ....

But anyways it would be laughably improbable that U.S would invade India .... Cause then Russia will also get involved .... and U.S has long considered India as a Buffer to China .

I have been watching the race to white house for a very long (for past 8~10 months) starting from the Hilary-Obama fight for the Democratic seat.I was so happy That Obama won & then become the 1st Black President.
A black man in the White house - What an idea, sirji.
I have not even followed our Lok Shaba election that much.

Obama has a new website at Change.gov , probably till the completion of transition.

On Asia from Foreign Policy | Change.gov ; No mention of India or Pakistan.

Seek New Partnerships in Asia: Obama and Biden will forge a more effective framework in Asia that goes beyond bilateral agreements, occasional summits, and ad hoc arrangements, such as the six-party talks on North Korea. They will maintain strong ties with allies like Japan, South Korea and Australia; work to build an infrastructure with countries in East Asia that can promote stability and prosperity; and work to ensure that China plays by international rules.

Correct in his policy Statements nothing about Kashmir..........In one of his speech he made a passing reference to something about solving Kashmir problem .....
When Democrats were in power last time they seemed very interested in Kashmir affair ... [ that is a good decade ago]

So now Indians are wary about them again taking interest in the issue ....

-->There is very little probability of Obama Taking up the issue as he has more pressing matters at home [like economy and Iraq] ...which may take up to 3 yrs to be resolved ..... after that he also wants to Diplomatically deal with Iran and Russia [beautifully put ....."Opposed Bush-Cheney Saber Rattling"]

Indians r assuming that he may take interest 'Cuz of the reason i said above

    Officially this is their stance

They will maintain strong ties with allies like Japan, South Korea and Australia; work to build an infrastructure with countries in East Asia that can promote stability and prosperity; and work to ensure that China plays by international rules.

Why i think Obama is good

That's why Obama stood up to the Bush administration's warnings of war, just like he stood up to the war in Iraq.

Obama and Biden opposed the Kyl-Lieberman amendment, which says we should use our military presence in Iraq to counter the threat from Iran. Obama and Biden believe that it was reckless for Congress to give George Bush any justification to extend the Iraq War or to attack Iran.

Obama supports tough, direct presidential diplomacy with Iran without preconditions.

The United States is trapped by the Bush-Cheney approach to diplomacy that refuses to talk to leaders we don't like. Not talking doesn't make us look tough – it makes us look arrogant, it denies us opportunities to make progress

To make diplomacy a priority, Obama will stop shuttering consulates and start opening them in the tough and hopeless corners of the world – particularly in Africa.

Obama and Biden will embrace the Millennium Development Goal of cutting extreme poverty around the world in half by 2015, and they will double our foreign assistance to $50 billion to achieve that goal.

They will stop the development of new nuclear weapons; work with Russia to take U.S. and Russian ballistic missiles off hair trigger alert; seek dramatic reductions in U.S. and Russian stockpiles of nuclear weapons and material

Obama will insulate the Director of National Intelligence from political pressure

Obama will reverse President Bush's policy of secrecy. He will institute a National Declassification Center to make declassification secure but routine, efficient, and cost-effective.

I hope so too but it is a double edged sword, If Obama makes some
mistakes like Bush during his presidency then it will just give
    more fodder for the racists.

Thumbs up India Inc in the white House !

Well after Obama's Nomination things are already starting to look uphill for India ! ........

    quoting verbatim from "The Hindu"
    QUOTE
With the election of Barack Obama as President of united States another devolopment of significance occured on Nov 4 .
The nearly 2 decades old India Caucus of the house of representatives is one of the strongest groupings on the capitol Hill with over a third of the 435 Members of Congress in it .
    UNQUOTE

One of them Mr . McDermott is of the view that election of Obama is not only good news just for America but for the rest of the world in general and India in particular

The Congressman from Washington said he would urge the new president to tour India as a gesture of America's friendship and commitment to India that began under the last democrat President Clinton !

Looking very good for India i would say
